Guillermo Del Toro's Next Movie Is About a Fish Man

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 08:30 PM PST

One of the most anticipated movies of the year, despite there being so little known about it, is Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water. The filmmaker behind Pacific Rim, Crimson Peak and the Hellboy series is that much of a draw for fans. But now we do have some information on his next feature, and it's got us even more excited.  Doug Jones, who has been a del Toro staple for decades (he plays the Pale Man and the Faun in Pan's Labyrinth and Abe Sapien in Hellboy and its sequel -- pictured above), provided Collider with details on his role in The Shape of Water and the movie's premise. Turns out, he's playing another aquatic character, like Abe.  It’s a 1963 drama—it’s not a sci-fi...

The Geek Beat: The 10 Best Geeky Movies of 2016

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 06:00 PM PST

In our last column, we took a look ahead to the geeky films we're most excited about this year, but what about the 12 months of movies behind us? Last year was filled with epic highs and lows both inside and outside theaters, and for every film that fell short of expectations, there was a movie that either lived up to all of the hype or came out of nowhere to surprise us in the best possible way. From the unexpectedly moving alien encounter in Arrival to the brilliant, genre-busting wit of Deadpool, it was a good year for superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy fare. Here are the 10 movies (listed in alphabetical order, not by how much we love them) that had much to do with making it such a great year for fans of geek-friendly cinema:   10 Cloverfield Lane This loosely...

'Deadpool' Just Got a Best Screenplay Nomination From the Writers Guild of America

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 04:30 PM PST

When it comes to big Hollywood awards, superhero movies tend to get overlooked. Sure, the Oscars often nominate big budget movies for technical awards, but rarely do they pop up for some of the more marquee categories. That doesn't mean the rest of Hollywood ignores one of the biggest box office earners around, though. The Writers Guild of America, for example, just nominated Deadpool for Best Adapted Screenplay. The nomination came as quite the surprise, too. Not because the WGA has a history of ignoring superhero movies (recently, Guardians of the Galaxy got a nomination), but because there was no campaign from team Deadpool for the award. They didn't even send out screeners to the WGA's voting members for consideration (they did to Academy members, however). This...

Watch the Trailer for 'Bright Lights,' a Documentary About Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 03:00 PM PST

When it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds was seen as a charming, caring look at a truly unique relationship between a mother and daughter that just so happen to be famous. While it was well received, it didn't make any huge waves at the time, mainly because most people wouldn't even see the movie until HBO aired it later in 2017. And then the unthinkable happened. First Carrie Fisher passed away and then a day later Debbie Reynolds passed as well. Suddenly Bright Lights became no ordinary documentary, but a candid look at the lives of two incredible women whose story ended in a most unexpected way. HBO understandably decided to advance its release date substantially. It'll now be on...

'Deadpool' Creator Rob Liefeld Nabs Movie Deal for "Extreme Universe" Characters

Posted: 04 Jan 2017 01:30 PM PST

The so-called "extreme universe" is heading to the big screen. Plans are afoot to make movies based on comic book characters created by writer and artist Rob Liefeld (Deadpool) in nine different comic books, according to Deadline. In a world now awash in movies based on characters from Marvel and DC comic books, how will the "extreme universe" distinguish itself? One possibility is for an R-rated cinematic universe. Deadpool has already proven that an R-rated comic book movie can be a big success; it earned even more at the foreign box office ($420 million) than it did in the U.S. ($363 million). Logan will be the next big test when it opens on March 3. Let's break things down further with the principals who will be involved on the production...

Han Solo: Woody Harrelson (The Edge of Seventeen, above) is in early talks to play Han Solo's mentor in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie. Reportedly, he is the top choice for the role, though it's far from a done deal. If things work out, Harrelson would join Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke. The movie, which will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, is set for release in 2018. [Variety]   Tough As They Come: Adam Driver (Paterson, above) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed, above) will star in Tough As They Come. Stallone is also attached to direct. It's based on a memoir by Travis Mills (Driver), who was severely injured in battle and then had to cope with life as a quadruple amputee, aided by the support of his father-in-law...
