The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The latest trailer for Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still a bit all over the place, but there are enough comprehensive story details and fully fleshed-out moments to make the piece quite engaging rather than just a one-note voiceover paired with a haphazard montage like the last one. That opening sequence alone accomplishes quite a bit. It’s got some solid action, functions as a powerful reveal and shows off humor that really works. The trailer does lose a little steam at the midpoint, which doesn’t help Shredder’s big moment, but as soon as that...

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Today marks the start of the New York Asian Film Festival, which runs from June 27 to July 14, 2014. Every year it's one of the biggest showcases of Asian cinema anywhere in the United States, and is often one of the only ways people in the U.S. will even be able to see many of these movies on the big screen. That's a bit of a bummer if you're nowhere near New York City, but if you are, this year's lineup of 60 feature films is drool inducing and includes (but is hardly limited to): The Snow White Murder Case The Terror Live Overheard 3 Rigor Mortis Public Enemy Firestorm 3D Cold Eyes That's just a taste of what's in store (there is also a ton of special events and guests). Andy Serkis Reveals What a Conversation Between Gollum and Caesar Might Look Like

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Andy Serkis is arguably one of the most famous actors in the world that no one would recognize on the street. The performer is best known for playing Gollum in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, but he’s also spent time as Caesar, the superintelligent ape in the Planet of the Apes rebooting. Both of those roles kept the actor largely offscreen, thanks to the magic of motion capture and computers. Serkis is out doing promotional appearances for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (in theaters July 11) and he stopped by Conan O’Brien’s show. While there, Conan got the actor to do a hilarious bit of performance art where Gollum and Caesar discuss whether or not O’Brien is funny. It’s amazing how effortlessly Serkis switches between...

Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis Save the Galaxy in This New 'Jupiter Ascending' Trailer

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

The Wachowksis sure do love making lush sci-fi epics with stunning visuals -- and this new trailer for their upcoming feature Jupiter Ascending finds the directing duo back in top form. Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis headline this tale, with Kunis playing a woman who doesn’t realize she’s really intergalactic royalty, and Tatum starring as the guy sent to protect her from various other factions that want her dead. Think of it as sort of like The Terminator, minus the T-800 and with way prettier visuals, and you’re basically on the right track. Those visuals threatened to derail the project, which has now been pushed back to a February 2015 release date so that Warner Bros. and the Wachowskis could get the quality of the imagery up to their standards. It...

Relive 12 Years of Your Life by Listening to All the Songs from Richard Linklater's 'Boyhood'

Posted: 27 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

When it comes to choosing a nostalgic soundtrack that makes clever use of popular music as a storytelling device, Richard Linklater is one of the pros. The release of his 12-years-in-the-making film Boyhood is just weeks away. Now that a soundtrack list has been released, it’s clear that Linklater perfectly captured the spirit of a decade in one boy’s life from ages six to 18. Songs from Coldplay, Britney Spears and Cat Power populate the soundtrack. The selection contributed to Boyhood’s $200,000-a-year production cost, for a total of $2.4 million. We think it was money well spent. Our friends at The Film Stage created a Spotify playlist for your listening pleasure. A few songs were excluded due to accessibility (plus several tracks that star Ethan...
