The Most Terrifying Movies Based on True Stories

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror. The newest title to join the “based on real events” subgenre is Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us from Evil, which opens nationwide on July 2. Eric Bana stars as Ralph Sarchie, a New York cop who becomes embroiled in a supernaturally tinged case that sees him teaming up with a priest who performs exorcisms. This was Sarchie’s first encounter with the supernatural, but the cop says this was just the tip of the iceberg – and we suspect that we’ll be seeing more of his paranormal adventures should Deliver Us from Evil prove to be a hit. If you’re looking for more spooky stories inspired by real-life hauntings and crimes, and have already seen the obvious choices...

'Life After Beth' Trailer: Would You Still Date Aubrey Plaza As a Zombie?

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

My Boyfriend's Back is a fun, totally tongue-in-cheek '90s comedy about a guy who dies before he gets to go on the date of his dreams. So, naturally, he defies death, climbs out of the grave, and goes back to his normal life. And everyone, well, mostly everyone, pretends like it's totally okay that he's a zombie, even as he starts eating those around him. Life After Beth looks a little like that, though with the genders swapped. It stars Dane DeHaan as a boy in love with a girl (Aubrey Plaza), who dies only to come back, seemingly normal but with superstrength and an insatiable hunger for human flesh. Here's what Erik had to say in his review from its Sundance world premiere earlier this year: The real highlight though is Aubrey Plaza, and when she's...

Watch: George Lucas' Student Short Film That Inspired 'THX 1138'

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Before George Lucas’ 1971 dystopian classic THX 1138 hit theaters — about a future in which an android police force controls the populace and mandatory drugs quell emotions and personal desires — there was Lucas’ student film the story was based on. Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB was created in 1967 while the director was still wet behind the ears, attending the University of Southern California's film school. Running 15 minutes long, Lucas cast his student short with members of the real-life Navy — as several military members were also attending USC for their studies. Most of the filming took place at night in locations the Navy granted him special access to. After 12 weeks of shooting in the USC computer center, a parking lot at...

See Concept Art from Ron Howard's Cancelled Adaptation of Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower'

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT

If you've read Stephen King's The Dark Tower, you no doubt know it could make for one hell of a live-action franchise. You also probably no doubt know that it would actually make for a much better longform TV series like Game of Thrones (even King agrees in that regard) than a movie. But, as of right now, Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman's have the rights to the sprawling fantasy series about a gunslinger's quest to catch and kill a lone figure called the Man in Black, and they're hoping to turn it into a trilogy with a TV series between movies, though no studio has actually taken them up on that plan. As much as we love to root for movies around here, we actually kind of hope that Howard and Goldsman's plans for a Dark Tower movie trilogy never do get...

'Ghostbusters' Meets Quentin Tarantino in this Awesome Lee Hardcastle Claymation Mash-up

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Since it seems like we may never see a Ghostbusters 3 on the big screen (and honestly, we’re okay with that), this cool new Claymation short might be the next best thing – particularly if you love our ghost-busting pals from the original film and the work of Quentin Tarantino. Lee Hardcastle has crafted Ghostbusters Volume 3 – a short film that puts Peter Venkman and company into animated form, while re-creating scenes from Quentin Tarantino’s filmography. Yes, it’s a little random as far as the high concept goes, but Hardcastle (who’s work has appeared in projects like The ABCs of Death) makes it all work in a surprisingly entertaining way. The filmmaker leaves no stone unturned in his quest to skewer all things Tarantino – there...

Scott Derrickson Updates Us on 'Two Eyes Staring,' 'When Gravity Fails,' 'Deus Ex' and 'The Postmortal'

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 02:08 PM PDT

Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister) has his latest horror movie, Deliver Us from Evil, hitting theaters next week. And while you'd think that may keep him occupied, he's also producing Sinister 2, writing an Outer Limits movie, and directing Doctor Strange for Marvel Studios. But apparently that's still not enough to keep this workaholic satisfied. A few months ago Derrickson tweeted a picture of the shelf where he keeps all of his completed scripts. So when we spoke with the writer-director earlier this week about Deliver Us from Evil, we couldn't help but ask about status updates on some of the most recent projects revealed in that picture. We didn't have time to hear about everything in it - like what would have been in his version of...

'The Guest' Trailer: Get Your First Tease of One of 2014's Most Entertaining Movies

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Today's man-on-a-mission action movies all pretty much follow in the steps of Taken: a single guy with a very particular set of skills is hell-bent on a righteous path of revenge or redemption. And as cool as the action can be in those movies, there's just something routine and safe and predictable about the way they all play out. Enter The Guest, which is kind of like the anti-Taken in that it is a man-on-a-mission action movie that delights in completely destroying any sense of safety and routine. It's about David (Dan Stevens, giving an instant, star-making performance), a mysterious soldier who pays a surprise visit to the family of one of his dead Army buddies with the promise of helping them out. We quickly begin to suspect that not all may be right with...

'Stargate' and 'Predator' Reveal Two Different Ways to Revive Classic Franchises

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

There’s an old saying that states there’s more than one way to skin a cat – and Hollywood appears set to learn this lesson when it comes to sequels and reboots if Shane Black and Dean Devlin have their way. Black and Devlin have both been in the news recently because they’re involved with crafting new iterations of beloved franchises. The big news this week was that Black and Fred Dekker will team up for a new Predator movie. Meanwhile, Devlin continues to talk about reviving the Stargate franchise. Updating old franchises is nothing new in Hollywood, but what’s interesting is that these two films are taking different approaches to how they’re returning to the screen. Black recently revealed that those early Predator reboot reports...

Watch: Even Rachel McAdams' Audition for 'The Notebook' Will Make You Cry

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Fellow Canadians Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were the talk of the town when Nick Cassavetes’ The Notebook hit theaters 10 years ago this week. Their on-screen chemistry shone through in the romantic tearjerker about a wealthy Southern belle who carries on a forbidden affair with a plain-spoken laborer. Gosling and McAdams had an offscreen romance after filming, but it wasn’t until years later that Gosling spoke about their combative relationship on the set of The Notebook. “We inspired the worst in each other. It was a strange experience, making a love story and not getting along with your costar in any way,” the actor said. Gosling even went so far as to demand another actress be brought in for their scenes, since he didn’t want to look...

Here's What Those 'Edge of Tomorrow' Aliens Almost Looked Like

Posted: 26 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

As big fans of concept art around these parts, we're always excited to dive further behind the scenes of an alien-invasion movie because whenever a film is set to introduce an army of aliens, you just know there's massive amounts of alien art lying around some corner of the Internet. And that's exactly what we have for you today, thanks to Edge of Tomorrow production designer Oliver Scholl, who's released a ton of art his team created for the summer movie, including these alternate versions of its alien race, known as Mimics. According to Scholl, their starting point for creating the Mimics was the original source, All You Need Is Kill, which began as a novel and later became a graphic novel. Here's what the Mimics looked like in the graphic novel...
