Marvel Studios Countdown: The 20 Baddest Marvel Studio Villains

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 07:05 PM PDT

Lee Pace is Ronin the Accuser, Karen Gillan is Nebula, and Josh Brolin is Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, James Spader is Ultron in Avengers 2, now Corey Stoll or Patrick Wilson might be Crossfire or a revamped Yellowjacket in Ant-Man. Marvel Studios doesn’t have the luxury of the fantastic rogues available with the Spider-Man or X-Men franchises, but they’ve still been able to generate excitement for these upcoming villains by being smart with the ones that they do have. That’s not to say they aren’t without some heavy-hitters, but a look at the Top 20 baddest of the bad reveals that a lot of the ones that made the biggest impact on the Marvel U were just some jerks in expensive suits.

The Geek Beat: Falling in Love with 'Star Wars' All Over Again

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 07:00 PM PDT

I remember sitting in a crowded theater back in 1999, watching Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace on opening night with some friends from college, and coming to the realization that somewhere between the umpteenth viewing of The Return of the Jedi and this very moment, I'd fallen out of love with Star Wars.   It wasn't a sudden thing, or a reaction to any particular element of The Phantom Menace (although I'm sure Jar Jar Binks deserves some of the blame), but a general feeling of malaise regarding the franchise. For some reason, I now found myself with a conspicuous lack of excitement regarding what the future held for George Lucas' sci-fi saga. Given how crazy about the franchise I'd been for much of my childhood – one of my...

New on DVD/Blu-ray: '300: Rise of an Empire' Bashes Heads in, While 'Enemy' Blows Minds Out

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 06:00 PM PDT

300: Rise of an Empire - Warner Bros. - Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD Director: Noam Murro Cast: Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Lena Headey, Hans Matheson, Rodrigo Santoro. Full cast + crew 300: Rise of an Empire has got brawny men generating tidal waves of CGI blood, but it's weirdly lacking the heart and underdog camaraderie that made the first movie such a hit. The plot this time is a bit convoluted since it's a prequel, a side-quel, and a sequel all at the same time (just accept that people are fighting for various reasons), but it benefits from having the always enjoyable presence of Eva Green as the antagonist. There's not really anything new or inventive here, and the whole style of the movie seems particularly stale if you...

Hear Pearl Jam Cover "Let It Go," Plus: Other Middle-aged Dads Honor the 'Frozen' Madness

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Frozen fandom continues to warm hearts and inspire interpretations. The love of “Let It Go” from the hit Disney movie seems to know no bounds. It’s been covered in 42 languages, meme-ized like gangbusters, and now Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder is getting in on the action. He sang a few lines from the Academy Award-winning tune at a recent concert, putting his garble-mouthed spin on Elsa’s song of empowerment and imagination. Vedder has two little girls of his own, so we’re sure the earworm has been in his head since 10-year-old Olivia and five-year-old Harper first heard it. In this video clip, captured by an audience member, Vedder uses “Let It Go” as a tag to his much-loved song “Daughter.” Dig in for a ’90s-style...

'Predator' Is Being Rebooted by 'Iron Man 3' Director Shane Black

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 03:45 PM PDT

It was only a matter of time before Fox decided to reboot Predator. The studio has already made two crossover films, and a pseduo-reboot with 2010's Predators, but this time around it's pressing the reset button for good. And while that doesn't automatically have us excited, the person pressing the reset button does: Shane Black. Not only was Shane Black in the first Predator, but he's one of the greatest action writers and directors around. Most recently he turned Iron Man 3 into arguably the best stand-alone Marvel movie, but he's also been involved with so many great movies, like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout and Last Action Hero. And so we're happy to see him take on a new Predator movie. But that's not all. Black will be writing the...

Why You Need to Watch 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' in IMAX 3D

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Whenever a movie arrives in theaters boasting various ways to watch it (2D, 3D, IMAX, etc.), folks understandably need some guidance as to which experience is the best. Most of the time this guidance comes from critics, though lately filmmakers are also taking their mission statement directly to the people, explaining why you need to watch their movie a certain way. Recently James Gunn wrote passionately about why Guardians of the Galaxy is worth the IMAX 3D ticket, and now Michael Bay is doing the same for Transformers: Age of Extinction, teasing the fact that a whopping 60% of the movie fills the entire IMAX screen. Here's what Bay has to say over on his personal website: The best way to see this movie is definitely in IMAX 3D. By far. Why? Because for one, we did...

Watch: What It Might Look Like if Matthew McConaughey, Aaron Paul and More Played Batman

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

This week our collective minds are swimming in a pool of Batman nostalgia, as Tim Burton's Batman turns 25. We're watching old behind-the-scenes videos, complaining about Jack Nicholson's over-the-top performance and remembering how it completely changed the game in terms of movie merchandising and marketing. Additionally, with San Diego Comic-Con only a few weeks away, folks are starting to anticipate the first footage of Ben Affleck as the new big-screen Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which arrives on May 6, 2016. See Affleck as the Bat-dude above. Of course that's not quite enough Batman for one week (especially for you Bat-nerds out there), and so definitely check out this funny animated video that imagines other stars as Batman in future...

'Jurassic World' Behind-the-Scenes Video: Spielberg's Involvement, Gift Shop Tour, Dino Food and More

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

NBC's The Today Show revealed the first behind-the-scenes footage of Jurassic World this morning, and while it doesn't contain a ton of juicy footage, it is our first look at the cast and crew talking about the highly anticipated movie. We get to see director Colin Trevorrow approving a shot where a giant slab of meat hangs in the jungle, presumably to lure in some hungry dinos, and talking about Steven Spielberg's involvement.   Plus, we also get to hear Chris Pratt explain the plot in simple, spoiler-free terms, hear Bryce Dallas Howard's rather infectious laugh, and see kid stars Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins do their best screams. Perhaps the best part about The Today Show's visit to the New Orleans set, however, is the tour through the theme...

New 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Trailer and Character Posters

Posted: 24 Jun 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Ever since the announcement that Michael Bay would share in producing a new version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, die-hard fans have been sharpening their pitchforks in anticipation that Bay and company would be wandering too far from the sacred beloved property everyone grew up on. The discussion became even more divided when the first trailers hit, revealing different body builds and a more reptilian look for the turtles. Now four new character posters are in the process of being released. (We've got three so far; see the video below, in which Megan Fox explains how fans can use Twitter at a dedicated website to help unlock the last poster, leading to the release of a new trailer.) Do they assuage any outstanding concerns about the appearance of the fighting turtles...
