Nineties nostalgia has been kicked into overdrive lately, with casts of classic series like "The Wonder Years" hosting reunions in recent weeks. Now, "Blossom" is getting in on the action, too, with a new set of photos that hit the web this week.

Four original cast members from the series -- Mayim Bialik (Blossom), Jenna Von Oy (Six), Michael Stoyanov (Tony), and Joey Lawrence (Joey) -- reunited in honor of "Blossom"'s upcoming debut on Hub Network, shooting some promo TV spots and photos.

Bialik shared snaps of the event on her Twitter account Monday, some professional and some candid, and all full of joy. The actress remarked that everyone "still look[s] like young whippersnappers," and we have to agree. Here's a cute selfie:

Joey Lawrence seemed especially excited about the mini reunion and subsequent syndication revival of "Blossom." He tweeted: "Thank u all 4 ur excitement!! I can feel it!! It's going 2 b awesome to see Blssom again. All 5 seasons. Starting July 7th on @hubtvnetwork."

NBA Stars Reading Mean Tweets Is Hilariously Awkward (VIDEO)

NBA Stars Mean Tweets
The NBA season is over and Lebron James was knocked off the throne.

In the wake of the San Antionio Spurs victory over two-time reigning champion Miami Heat, Jimmy Kimmel released an NBA edition of Mean Tweets -- and it hits nothing but net. The video features some hilarious (and uncomfortable) moments with basketball stars Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Paul George, and others, though Dikembe Mutombo's tweet at the end might just steal the show.

Zendaya Will Play Singer Aaliyah in Lifetime Biopic

Posted:

After announcing a biopic of late singer Whitney Houston, Lifetime is adding another movie about a fallen pop star to its schedule.

The network is set to make a film about the life of Aaliyah, the R&B singer who died in 2001, featuring current Disney star Zendaya Coleman in the title role. Coleman -- who professionally goes by only her first name, just like Aaliyah -- is the star of Disney Channel series "Shake it Up!," and last year completed a stint on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars." In addition to her similar choice of moniker, Coleman is also a singer, scoring a million-selling single from her 2013 self-titled debut album.

Aaliyah was just 22 when she died in a plane crash in the Bahamas after shooting a music video there. During her short lifetime, she frequently topped the charts with hits like "Try Again" and "Are You That Somebody," and had also embarked on a burgeoning career as an actress, starring in 2000's "Romeo Must Die" and 2002's "Queen of the Damned."

Lifetime's biopic will be based on a bestselling book about the late singer, "Aaliyah: More Than a Woman," by Christopher Farley. The movie has been tentatively titled "Aaliyah: Princess of R&B."

Director Bradley Walsh ("Turn the Beat Around") is helming the project, and "Brown Sugar" scribe Michael Elliot is penning the screenplay. No word on a premiere date yet.

'Jeopardy!' Host Alex Trebek Sets World Record for Longest-Running Presenter

Posted:

jeopardy alex trebek record"Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek became the answer to his own bit of trivia last week when the longtime game show host set a Guinness World Record for most episodes of a single game show hosted by the same presenter.

Trebek hit the milestone last Friday, when he wrapped his 6,829th episode of the venerable quiz show. The "Jeopardy!" host beat out former "The Price Is Right" host Bob Barker, the previous holder of the Guinness record.

Despite suffering several heart attacks throughout "Jeopardy!"'s 30-year run under his tenure, Trebek has never missed an episode due to illness. The only installment of the show he didn't helm during that timeframe came in 1997, when he switched duties with "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak for an April Fool's Day prank.

"It's an honor to hold the Guinness World Record for hosting Jeopardy!, which I've often said is the best of reality T.V.," Trebek said in a statement. "We have had incredible support from our viewers for the past 30 years, and without them, I wouldn't have set this record."

Trebek was presented with a plaque commemorating the milestone last week. He joked in a video interview that the record meant that he'd "been around a long time," but added that he was happy to hold the distinction.

"The good news is that as long as I keep hosting the program, I stay ahead of whoever's in second place," Trebek added.

'The Powerpuff Girls' To Return to Cartoon Network With New Series

Posted:

Children dance along with cartoon charac
"The Powerpuff Girls" is the latest kid-friendly series that's set for a reboot, as Cartoon Network announced that the show will return to airwaves will all-new episodes in 2016.

"Powerpuff Girls," about a pint-sized trio of young superheroines out to save the world, was created back in 1998, and ran on CN for 78 episodes. The popular series won two Emmys during its run, and recently came back for a computer-generated, reimagined standalone feature, "The Powerpuff Girls: Dance Pantsed," which aired on Cartoon Network in January.

"The original 'Powerpuff Girls' was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide," said Rob Sorcher, Cartoon Network's chief content officer, in a statement announcing the news. "We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."

It was no doubt the warm reaction to "Dance Pantsed" that paved the way for "Powerpuff"'s return, though as The A.V. Club notes, the creator and writer of the original series, Craig McCracken and Lauren Faust, respectively, were not involved in that project, and most likely won't be back for the series, either. But the site also said that original voice actors Tara Strong (Bubbles), Elizabeth Daily (Buttercup), and Cathy Cavadini (Blossom), did reprise their roles for "Dance Pantsed," and are a safe -- though unconfirmed -- bet for "Powerpuff" 2.0.

"As the original ambassador of 'girl power,' The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation," said Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America at Cartoon Network Enterprises.

The new "Powerpuff Girls" joins "Reading Rainbow" and "The Magic School Bus," two other long-gone, beloved series getting the reboot treatment.

New Beatles 'Event Series' Coming to NBC

Posted:

nbc logoBeatlemania is sweeping the U.S. once more: Deadline reports that NBC is developing a new series about the Fab Four.

According to the trade, the drama would chronicle the rise of the music superstars, from their early days in Liverpool, England to their current consideration as one of the biggest, most influential bands of all time. The as-yet-untitled project would be an eight episode event series, following in the footsteps of NBC's other attempts at limited, buzzworthy programming, like its live staging on "The Sound of Music" and the miniseries "Rosemary's Baby."

The creative team behind the show is no stranger to British history, though the trio had previously tackled a subject a few hundred years ahead of The Beatles's time. Deadline writes that the series is being shepherded by Michael Hirst, the creator and executive producer of "The Tudors," as well as Ben Silverman and Teri Weinberg, who co-executive produced the Showtime series about King Henry VIII. Hirst will write the Beatles project, while all three will co-executive produce.

There have been only a handful of attempts to tell The Beatles's story before, most likely because the rights to their catalog come with a hefty pricetag, and are not granted lightly. Director Sam Taylor-Johnson's ("Fifty Shades of Grey") first feature, 2009's "Nowhere Boy," focused on the early life of John Lennon, but didn't include Fab Four music. The one project to receive those rights, a biopic about the band's manager, Brian Epstein, titled "The Fifth Beatle," has been in development for some time now, with director Peyton Reed attached.

We'd imagine the success of this new project will depend largely on whether or not it can secure the group's iconic music. Stay tuned for further developments.

All the Times Arya and The Hound Bickered on 'Game of Thrones' (VIDEO)

Posted:

Last night's episode of "Game of Thrones" was unbelievably awesome (save for one notable omission, which would have made the nearly year-long wait for next season unbearable) and included one of our very favorite elements of the series: The Hound and Arya bickering. Ah, yes. Even if this is the last time the two trade barbed words (um, spoiler alert), we had some fun times, didn't we?

Thankfully, in order to commemorate their squabbling, Vulture has assembled a minute long + supercut of all of the times they verbally sparred with one another. No matter what kingdom you pledge allegiance to - this is really funny and awesome and, in some small way, will help tide you over until next year. Why is it so long until the next season? I feel like a chained up dragon calling out for its hot bleach blond mother!

If you haven't seen "Game of Thrones" yet, which I can only blame on a prolonged prison sentence or tenure on a space station located in the deepest recesses of our galaxy, it's probably best that you not watch this montage.

Aquaman in 'Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice' Goes to Jason Momoa

Posted:

aquaman batman v superman dawn of justice jason momoaIt's been rumored for a while, but now it's apparently a done deal: Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice."

HitFix had the scoop this weekend, writing that while Momoa had previously complained about being asked about the role, the media was on to something.

"While Warner Bros. hasn't made that announcement officially yet, HitFix can confirm that he will be playing the part, and that [director] Zack Snyder has already finalized his designs for the character so shooting can take place soon," the site said.

And that's not all. According to HitFix, while Momoa won't have much to do in "Batman vs. Superman," his small part will set in motion events that will eventually play out in the "Justice League" films.

" ... [W]hat we're hearing is that [Aquaman] is not pleased about the World Engine and what it did to the Indian Ocean [in 'Man of Steel']," writes HitFix about Aquaman's role in "Dawn of Justice."

Momoa ("Game of Thrones") joins a host of new superhero characters in the "Man of Steel" follow-up, including Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). Henry Cavill is returning as Superman.

"Batman vs. Superman" hits theaters on May 6, 2016.

'Tammy' Unscripted: Ask Melissa McCarthy, Susan Sarandon, and Ben Falcone a Question

Posted:

tammy unscriptedBlockbuster comedy veteran Melissa McCarthy ("The Heat," "Bridesmaids") is throwing her hat, once again, into the R-rated comedy ring -- and this time she's bringing Susan Sarandon along for the ride. Literally.

In "Tammy," the duo -- who play a grandmother and granddaughter -- embark on an epic road trip, stopping along the way to commit random acts of comedy. Also along for the ride is McCarthy's real-life husband, Ben Falcone (her inflight love interest in "Bridesmaids"), who assumes directing duties and co-wrote the screenplay with his wife. All three are sitting down for a sure-to-be-epic episode of Unscripted, which means we need plenty of questions from you.

You'll have until noon PT Thursday, June 19, to submit your questions. Leave them in the comments below, on Moviefone's Facebook page, or via Twitter using the hashtag #TammyUnscripted.

Why Is 'Game of Thrones' Only 10 Episodes?

Posted:

game of thrones"Game of Thrones" has taken the "leave them wanting more" approach to storytelling for four seasons now, and with the recent news that the show has become HBO's most watched EVER, we can look forward to, say, four more of those rewarding/torturous seasons (keep writing those books, George RR Martin). And between those additional four seasons, like now, will come the inevitable 10 agonizing months of waiting (and waiting... and waiting...) for a scant 10 episodes meant to sate us.

But why, oh why, are we teased with just 10 episodes?

With the books running close to or over 1,000 pages a pop, it's not for a lack of story. But as HBO has said in the past, it's about quality, not quantity. To quote an early piece by TV Guide:

"As for longer seasons? Executives said they wouldn't be able to do more without lengthy delays or diluting the quality of the stories."

We have to imagine there are budgetary concerns as well. "Game of Thrones" features CGI, elaborate sets and costumes, as well as multiple international locales -- some of which aren't the easiest to shoot in, including Northern Ireland, Malta, Scotland, Croatia, Iceland, the United States, and Morocco.

Given all that goes into making "Game of Thrones," maybe we should be grateful for the 10 episodes we do get. "True Detective" was just eight episodes, after all.

'Father of the Bride 3' Gets a Gay Twist

Posted:

father of the bride 3 gayWell, it's never too late to return to the "Father of the Bride" well, we suppose, as Disney and Warner Bros are currently working on a "Father of the Bride 3," the third film in the trilogy that started in 1991 with "Father of the Bride" and continued in 1995 with "Father of the Bride Part II." (The first film was a remake of a 1950 film of the same name that starred Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett, while the second was a loose remake of that film's sequel, "Father's Little Dividend," which also starred Tracy and Bennett along with Elizabeth Taylor.) But this time out, there's a gay twist!

According to Nikki Finke, who broke the story, the "twist" is that Little Matty (the little boy from the first two films) is now 29 and gay and getting married to a Navy SEAL's son. Oh man, can you imagine the hilarity? Martin will definitely return as the titular father, and we can't imagine that original costars Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams, Martin Short and BD Wong won't be far behind. It would also be cool if Kieran Culkin, who has grown into a fine actor himself (just watch him in "Margaret" or "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World"), came back to play Matty.

Finke reports that Charles Shyer, who directed the first two films and co-wrote them with his then-wife Nancy Meyers (who Finke says passed on the project), will be back to helm the third film.

You know, as far as unnecessary sequels go, this could be pretty cute. The first two were warm and funny and featured great, mostly grounded performances by its cast. (Remember Martin freaking out about the number of hotdog buns? Classic.) We'll remain cautiously optimistic about this one, especially if they can wrangle the rest of the cast back.

Get Your First Look At the Pint-Sized Villains Of Disney's 'Descendants' (PHOTO)

Posted:

This is the next logical step of the live action retelling of classic Disney fairy tales thing that has been going on in the studio for a little while now: next year the Disney Channel will premiere its newest original movie "Descendants," which envisions what the children of some of Disney's fiercest villains would grow up to become.

According to Entertainment Weekly, which premiered the first photo, the unnecessarily complicated plot of "Descendants," which, it should be noted, has nothing to do with the Oscar-nominated George Clooney film, follows: "the kingdom's worst baddies have been exiled to the Isle of the Lost, a remote prison cut off from the world. After 20 years, Ben-the son of Belle and the Beast, and heir apparent to the throne-makes his first proclamation to free the children of the villains and offer them redemption." Okay.

The photo showcases Mal (Dove Cameron), Jay (Booboo Stewart), Evie (Sofia Carson) and Carlos (Cameron Boyce). Jay is definitely Cruella de Vil's son, but the others are sort of nebulously punky and I'm sure part of the movie will be the reveal of who these kids belong to, so there's that to look forward to. According to the EW report, they'll mix and mingle with the children of Disney heroes, as well, including Mulan's daughter Lonnie, Cinderella's son Chad and Dopey's son Doug. No word yet on whether or not this will crossover with "Once Upon a Time" and the Disney fairy tale universe will explode like a peep in the microwave.

Somewhat more interesting are the adult actors who play the various villains, including Kristin Chenoweth as Maleficent (move over, Angelina!), Kathy Najimy as the Evil Queen, Maz Jobrani as Jafar and Wendy Raquel Robinson as Cruella de Vil. Boom.

Look for "Descendants" on the Disney Channel sometime next year.

Harrison Ford's 'Star Wars' Injury Takes Him Out for Eight Weeks

Posted:

harrison ford injury star warsThe Force is most definitely not with Harrison Ford.

The 71-year-old actor was injured on the London set of J.J. Abrams's "Star Wars: Episode VII" on Thursday, when he collided with the door of the Millennium Falcon, his iconic spacecraft from the original "Star Wars" trilogy. Ford was rushed to the hospital, told that he broke his ankle and today the Hollywood Reporter notes that the star will be out of commission for the next eight weeks of filming. That's a lot of time off for one of the biggest draws of the new movie (filming will continue without Ford, who will jump back into it as soon as he's able).

"Star Wars: Episode VII" is still expected to make its December 18th, 2015, release date. And considering the staggering amount of visual effects trickery involved in the production of these movies, a little after-the-fact-Ford is probably easily accomplishable.

Unless you've been residing in the dark recesses of space, you know that "Star Wars: Episode VII" reunites the original stars of the series (Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher) with a cast of brand new Jedis, Sith Lords, and intergalactic rogues (among them: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac). Hopefully Ford feels better really soon, and not just because British hospital food is even worse than regular British food.

Box Office: Why Did '22 Jump Street' Win Against 'How to Train Your Dragon 2'?

Posted:

box officeThis weekend's battle of the sequels was supposed to be close, with nearly every pundit giving "How to Train Your Dragon 2" a slight edge over "22 Jump Street." To some experts, it wasn't even going to be close, with the cartoon expected to earn as much as $70 million, contrasted with about $50 million for the action comedy.

Well, it wasn't close, but Father's Day weekend ended with estimates of $60.0 million for "Jump Street" and just $50.0 million for "Dragon 2." This even though "Dragon 2" is playing on nearly 1,000 more screens than "Jump Street."

Why did nearly everyone overestimate the prospects for "Dragon 2" and underestimate those for "Jump Street"? Here are some possible reasons the two rival sequels fared as they did.

Animation is trending downward. A lot of folks thought "Dragon 2" would do well because there's no Pixar movie to compete against this summer. That's true, but cartoon features, from "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" to "Rio 2," have underperformed all year; the only real smash has been "The LEGO Movie."

R-rated comedy is trending upward. This has been the case for several summers now, including this one, with the success already of "Neighbors" (still in the top 10 after six weeks, it finished at No. 9 this weekend and has earned $143.1 million to date). True, "A Million Ways to Die in the West" tanked, but that's because the movie was no good, not because viewers are tired of raunchy humor. Indeed, "Million Ways"' absence as a competitor only strengthened "Jump Street," giving it the field all to itself.

Timeliness matters. It's been just two years since "21 Jump Street," so the high jinks of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as undercover cops posing as students are still fresh in fans' minds. It's been four years, however, since the original "Dragon," which is an eternity for the kid-movie audience. Sure, there's been a "DreamWorks Dragons" TV series to help remind young viewers of the 2010 movie, but that also makes this big-screen sequel less of a special event. A lot of the kids who loved the original film may have felt they've outgrown the franchise and graduated... to the "Jump Street" comedies.

Reviews matter. Well, sort of. Both movies earned extremely strong word-of-mouth, as measured by their grades at CinemaScore (A- for "Jump Street," A for "Dragon 2"). Reviews for both have been strong as well. But the first "Dragon" scored even better reviews than the sequel. The young adults who make up the "Jump Street" audience may not pay much attention to critics, but parents do, and they're the ones making purchasing decisions about "Dragon 2."

Everyone loves Channing Tatum. You might expect the sausage-fest team of Tatum and Hill to appeal mostly to guys. He works for male audiences both as an action star and as a light-comedy buddy-movie partner. But of course, women like the "Magic Mike" hunk, too. Not all of his recent movies have been huge, but the recent People Magazine "Sexiest Man Alive" knows his sweet spot and how to promote himself to audiences. (Not to knock two-time Oscar nominee Hill, who has also tirelessly promoted "Jump Street" on more than one continent, but who would you rather look at?).

How big a draw is Tatum to female moviegoers? Well, it's worth noting that last week's box office champ, "The Fault in Our Stars," fell to fifth place this weekend, losing a steep 67 percent of last week's business to take in just an estimated $15.7 million. This despite the tearjerking romantic drama's excellent word-of-mouth (it earned an A at CinemaScore) and critical acclaim. Where do you suppose that movie's predominantly female teen and young-adult audience went this weekend? Not to see a cartoon about a Viking lad.

One should also step back and note that a $50 million second-place opening is nothing to complain about. In fact, this is only the fourth weekend in history featuring two movies that opened at $50 million or higher. With no other cartoons due until Disney's "Planes" sequel on July 18, there's no reason "Dragon 2" shouldn't develop strong legs and become one of this summer's biggest family hits over the next few weeks. The overall box office gross this weekend is estimated at $188.0 million, the largest haul so far this summer. Everyone made money, so weep not for DreamWorks over "Dragon 2."
