The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 09:00 PM PST

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. Entourage As someone who’s only seen a few episodes of Entourage, I certainly can’t speak to how the first trailer for the feature film plays for those who stuck with the HBO show for all eight seasons, but as a newcomer I did walk away with a sense of why so many people would be so enraptured by this world. The trailer is slick, bold and has an infectious beat to it. It makes Entourage look like one huge, excessive party -- and while it may be packed with big egos and obnoxious behavior, it’s just a movie,so I want in.      Get Hard This first trailer for Get Hard doesn’t have...

Why 'Whiplash' Is the Best Movie of the Year

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 07:00 PM PST

It's always difficult to pick a favorite movie because we're forever entertained in so many different ways. We love laughing and crying and leaping out of our seats. We're just as addicted to the rush that comes with an incredible action sequence as we are to the emotions we experience after a particular story hits a little too close to home.  It's damn tough to put together this list, but in the end I always go with my gut. So here are my ten favorite movies of 2014... according to my gut.    10. Edge of Tomorrow It's rare to get a big summer action movie that isn't already tied to an existing franchise, and while that may have hurt Edge of Tomorrow at the box office, its brainy plot and unexpected performances helped earn it a...

Watch a Cute Short Film That Explains What Santa and His Team Do After Christmas

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 04:30 PM PST

U.K. animation team Jens & Anna reveal what Santa and his team get up to after the holidays. If you thought Saint Nick settled into his icy abode for a long winter’s nap, you thought wrong. It turns out that the jolly old man enjoys wearing different costumes (he’s always wanted a tail, so the frog getup is his favorite), sneaking booze into his coffee cup, and visiting his local house of domination so he can be bound, suspended and whipped with candy canes. Your average Christmas tree rehydrates those prickly needles by going diving, and the leftover presents kvetch at the local beauty salon. So basically, everyone is tired and weary and trying to piece together their sanity like most of America after the holiday. The cute short comforts us in that we’re...

These Are the Best Horror Movies of 2014, According to Our Expert

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 03:16 PM PST

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a bi-weekly column about all things related to horror. 2014 was an odd year for horror cinema in that there was no one title that stood out and dominated the conversation amongst fans. There was also a much appreciated dearth of sequels and remakes, with many filmmakers focusing on totally new and unique stories. Even the juggernaut-esque Paranormal Activity series took things in a slightly different direction with the spinoff entry The Marked Ones back in early January. There were sequels this year – including the latest V/H/S and ABCs of Death entries – but 2014 was really more about indies and new ideas. Because so much of this stuff doesn’t get the big studio push, it was easy to miss out on a lot of good frights in the...

Watch: This House Re-created the Epic 'Christmas Vacation' Lights Display

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 01:36 PM PST

When you think of the ultimate Christmas-movie lights display, you turn to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and the one Clark Griswold meticulously sets up on his house. If you remember the scene -- and most of us do because we probably watched the movie a bunch leading up to this year's holiday -- then of course you recall that Clark had so many lights on his house that he briefly took down power to the entire surrounding neighborhoods. Fortunately for the guy who won Fandango's "Christmas Movie My House" contest, things were a bit more organized when it came to awarding him a prize that included a lights display that looks very much like the one at Clark's house.  Ever wonder what the Griswold lights might look like in real life? Wonder...

Movie News: James Gunn Clarifies 'Guardians' / 'Avengers' Crossover; Funny 'Christmas Vacation' Prank

Posted: 26 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

Guardians of the Galaxy: Director James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, above) clarified his position about a possible crossover between his super team and the other Marvel super team, The Avengers. "I'm not going to tell anyone what happens to the Guardians, especially two or three movies down when who even knows if I'll be around anymore," he stated. "Regarding the bigger picture, we all agreed … to keep huge chunks of the Guardians separate from the Marvel heroes of earth, because they have a whole galaxy to explore." [Facebook]   National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation: Perhaps you watched Chevy Chase in his 1989 holiday classic National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation yesterday. Or, perhaps you were driving north on the Garden...
