What Christmas Movie Deserves a Marathon Run on TV?

Posted: 25 Dec 2014 09:00 PM PST

Eventually, the tradition of watching A Christmas Story over and over and over during one night of the holiday season is going to be holiday canon. Just as you can't celebrate the birth of Jesus without a decorated tree and stockings and eggnog, you won't be able to ignore Bob Clark's 1983 classic. There will be songs about it, like "Oh, A Christmas Story," and "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Story Marathon Viewing TIme," and there will also be a Claymation special where Rudolph is all upset because DirecTV is in a standoff with TBS and he can't watch the movie even once let alone 12 times.   A Christmas Story is great. It's a national treaure as much as it's a Christmas staple. In fact, the Library of Congress recently...

'80s Overload: See Joan Rivers, Oprah, Cher and More in 'Christmas at Pee-wee's Playhouse'

Posted: 25 Dec 2014 07:00 PM PST

If you’re already holiday-ed out by the relentless music and family films recycling through your television, we have a little something strange to lift you out of the Santa insanity. A friend of all things weird, Pee-wee Herman wrote the 1988 episode "Christmas at Pee-wee's Playhouse," which opens innocently enough with a performance from the UCLA Mens Choir. Things grow increasingly surreal — as Pee-wee’s guest list might suggest. Where else will you find a grown man in an ill-fitting suit who hangs out with the likes of Dinah Shore, Joan Rivers, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oprah, Whoopi Goldberg, Little Richard (on ice skates!), Charo, K.D. Lang, Grace Jones (dressed like a futuristic mannequin and singing yuletide songs!), Magic Johnson and the Del Rubio...

The Geek Beat: Remembering Movie-Related Toys of Christmas Past

Posted: 25 Dec 2014 02:30 PM PST

Merry Christmas! We hope you're enjoying all your new presents this year, and that Santa remembered to fill your stocking full of geeky gifts. With all the shopping I've been doing for my own child, I can't help thinking about some of the toys that found their way under my family's tree back when it was socially acceptable for me to wear footy pajamas. Sure, there were lots of toys based on cartoons and television series in my Christmas haul, but along with all of the G.I. Joe and Transformers stuff, there were some pretty memorable movie-related gifts that left an indelible mark on my memories of holidays past. So, in the grand tradition of taking a moment to recall the simpler times, this week's column takes a look back at some of my favorite movie-related...

Watch: Arnold Schwarzenegger's Vintage 'A Very Special Christmas Party' Video

Posted: 25 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mike Tyson, Randy Travis, Danny DeVito and Scott Hamilton got together with a bunch of kids from the Special Olympics and made a 1988 television program A Very Special Christmas Party. If you find the Governator's DVD and Blu-ray commentary tracks amusing, this should rank right up there with the best of them. Arnie plays the pseudo Santa of the bunch, holding throne in a La-Z-Boy recliner while tormenting the confused children around him with stories about satanic abduction during his childhood in Austria. It's a rollicking, merry, ho-ho good time! The surreal clip concludes with a musical number, in which we get to see Mike Tyson attempt to dance and look like he wants to get the hell out of there in a hurry. What a great bit of vintage weirdness...
