These 10 Bad Guys Could Use Their Own Movie

Posted: 27 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

We just had a ball with the new Godzilla. Meanwhile, Disney's Maleficent is just around the corner, proving that not all film protagonists need to be good guys. What other villains and antiheroes deserve their shot at a feature film? Find out below!   Keyser Soze We know so little about The Usual Suspect's Keyser Soze. For one, we only get an idea of who he is through reputation. But even worse, most of what we hear about him comes from an unlikely source - himself. Soze's mysterious nature allows him to seem huge in our minds without much actual evidence of his status. A film could help us out with that. Of course, it could just as easily ruin the character completely.   The Predator We typically witness the dignified hunting prowess of the...

Marvel Studios Countdown: Will the 'X-Men' Movies Ever Be Like the Actual Comic Books?

Posted: 27 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Now that the dust has settled after the explosive box office opening of X-Men: Days of Future Past, let’s think about where this leaves the franchise. Fox has to be feeling pretty confident about its ability to still sell tickets to a 14-year-old franchise without going the way of a total reboot. Some other installments’ box office receipts may have called that longevity into question, but the marketing did a good job selling this as a can’t-miss X-Men event, just like the comics do when there’s a major crossover. Writer Simon Kinberg has intimated that the next X-film, X-Men: Apocalypse, will follow the First Class cast (for the most part) into a “disaster movie” against the longtime villain Apocalypse. He said some of the original cast might...

Well, if you didn't see Cheap Thrills in theaters, and you didn't rent it On Demand, then now you are truly out of excuses. Here's What the Sentinels from 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Almost Looked Like

Posted: 27 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

No doubt some of the craziest scenes in X-Men: Days of Future Past involve the mutant-hunting Sentinels. They're probably some of the fiercest villains we've ever seen in a superhero movie, mainly because they're giants capable of tearing off body parts and vomiting fire. Even when you manage to somehow defeat one, they keep coming. And man are they scary.  Now that the film is in theaters, Framestore has released some of the Sentinel concept art it created for the movie, revealing a variety of different looks for both the future and 1970s versions. Before we get to them, though, let's start with Jack Kirby's original design for the Sentinels, if only to see how they've evolved over the years. Some more info on the Sentinels from our Marvel...

Listen: Rare Audio Recording Features J.R.R. Tolkien Discussing the Meaning of 'Lord of the Rings'

Posted: 27 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Noted author and Middle-earth creator J.R.R. Tolkien passed away back in 1973 – far too early to see how his epic fantasy saga would captivate film audiences around the globe. One of the most interesting things about Tolkien--and there are many--is that while an entire generation of fantasy fans adore his work, most of them haven’t even heard the man speak. That will change later this year. Tolkien attended what was called a “Hobbit dinner” in the Netherlands way back in 1958. Someone recorded the audio of the event, which found the writer talking about his work, reading poetry in Elvish, and just generally holding court amongst an appreciative audience. The recording disappeared, and was presumed lost for the ages, until Jay Johnstone (cofounder of the...

Watch Trailers for the 2014 Cannes Film Festival Winners

Posted: 27 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

The 67th annual Cannes Film Festival ended over the weekend, and winners were announced for the Un Certain Regard and Palme d'Or categories on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Those are the cream of the crop for the year, prestige-wise, and while not everyone loves every winner at Cannes, we movie fans can usually agree that they're all worth checking out to see for ourselves. In a way that means there's no other marketing needed for us. We don't have to watch a trailer for the Palme d'Or winner, because that laurel next to the title is enough to get us to go see Winter Sleep, even if it is more than three hours long. That said, we offer you the opportunity to view the trailer for that and other winners below anyway, just to boost your interest even...

Your hands were starting to tremble. You couldn't see straight. Thoughts were blurred. It has been almost two months since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Don't worry, you'll get your superhero fix with X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's kind of a sequel to X-Men: First Class, kind of a continuation of X-Men: The Last Stand, and kind of a stand-alone adventure. Your thirst will be quenched. But, will it be as good as the last time a really big pile of superheroes got together to save something? That's right, I'm talking about The Avengers. Which Marvel group will be better at delivering us from evil? I'm glad you asked. This week's Film Face-off is The Avengers vs. X-Men: Days of Future Past. The loser has to rewatch X-Men Origins: Wolverine and...

See Freaky Creature Designs from the Horror Movie Steven Spielberg Never Got to Make

Posted: 27 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Not too long ago, we featured an article talking about horror films that we’re unlikely to ever see. One of the entries on that list was Steven Spielberg’s Night Skies – a sort of sequel to Close Encounters that found a rural family confronting some far less friendly aliens. Spielberg eventually decided he didn’t want to make the movie, and the project fell apart – but Rick Baker’s creature designs have turned up on the Internet. Looking at them reveals that while the aliens of Night Skies never got to star in a film, they did at least serve as inspiration for another Spielberg project: E.T.   The DNA of Night Skies isn’t only visible in E.T., though – you can also find its influence in other projects like Poltergeist...
