The Geek Beat: 8 X-Men We Haven't Seen in Movies Yet, but Want To

Posted: 21 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

With X-Men: Days of Future Past arriving in theaters this weekend, Godzilla fading into the rearview mirror, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 already an afterthought (but still in theaters), it's already been a busy summer for the geeky side of Hollywood – and for movie audiences, too. And now it's time to look ahead to the return of Charles Xavier's team of mutant superheroes. The seventh installment of the X-Men franchise, Days of Future Past also serves as a bridge of sorts between the universe established in the first three X-Men films and Wolverine's solo movies, and the timeline of 2011's X-Men: First Class. Over the course of six films, the X-Men franchise has given a long list of mutants their big-screen debuts, but that list barely scratches the...

'The Search' Trailer: Here's a First Look at the Next Movie from the Director of 'The Artist'

Posted: 21 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Following his breakout film The Artist, which won Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards, Michel Hazanavicius is remaking the 1948 Fred Zinnemann film The Search. The film details the struggles of a young Auschwitz survivor and his mother who search for each other across post-World War II Europe. Zinnemann’s movie is famous for shooting against the ruins of postwar German cities. Clint Eastwood has even cited star Montgomery Clift’s performance as the single greatest influence on his career.    Hazanavicius' version stars Abdul Kahlim Mamutsiev as Hadji, orphaned during the Second Chechan War in the 1990s. NGO worker Carole (Berenice Bejo, who also happens to be Hazanavicius’ wife) takes him in. Meanwhile, Hadji’s older sister...

Comics on Film: Five Villains We Want to See in a 'Justice League' Movie

Posted: 21 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

After wondering for so long whether Warner Bros. would make a greater commitment to its DC Comics properties on film, it recently announced that a Justice League film would be following on the heels of 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Although no casting announcements have been made, it will likely see the return of Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, and the recently announced Ray Fisher as Cyborg. That leaves, at most, three vacancies on the superhero team if it follows DC Comics’ regular lineup of seven, which may include Green Lantern, the Flash and Aquaman. Some fans and observers have questioned Warner Bros.' wisdom of jumping from one quasi-team-up film to a conceivably massive...

Watch: Hilarious Riff on 'The Little Mermaid' Featuring the World's Hungriest Shark

Posted: 21 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

You know what would have made The Little Mermaid a lot more awesome? If it were about a giant shark wanting to live amongst humans. While Disney never gave that idea the serious consideration it deserves, the guys at Animation Domination have made our dreams come true with this short video titled The Little Mermaid, Except Shark. In it, our titular character sings a touching tune about how much he’d love to be able to walk amongst us – all for the sole purpose of experiencing new culinary delights like cops, police cars and monkeys. The video is a pretty amusing riff on The Little Mermaid and even manages to work in some social commentary at the very end. Finning is bad, kids. Check out the clip below, which is totally worth two-and-a-half minutes just for the image...

Geeks Are Entering the Age of Instant Backlash and It's Getting Really Tiresome

Posted: 21 May 2014 02:55 PM PDT

Today Warner Bros. announced the sequel to Man of Steel would be called Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the Internet immediately lost its mind and pounced on the title like a bunch of ghouls feasting on a newborn. And as I watched the vitriol flow across social media, all I could do is sit back and wonder why everyone is so angry all of the time these days. Maybe it's because I'm not a comics guy. I didn't grow up reading them, and as an adult I've only read a few of the more acclaimed comic runs. But can someone please explain to me what is so deeply offensive and noncomic booky about the subtitle Dawn of Justice? How is it a betrayal of characters that have had celebrated comic subtitles like Superman: Peace on Earth, Batman: Blind Justice or Wonder...

'Man of Steel 2' Gets an Official Title: 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice'

Posted: 21 May 2014 01:36 PM PDT

An official title (and new logo; see above) for the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, aka Batman vs. Superman, has finally revealed: Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. And in case it isn't immediately apparent, the title clearly suggests this installment will set up the previously announced Justice League movie, which will reportedly hit theaters in May of 2017 and be directed by Zack Snyder. The title announcement follows director Zack Snyder's recent reveal of Ben Affleck in the new Batman suit, as well as part of his updated Batmobile, both of which look to draw inspiration from older Batman comics like Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, a story this movie will borrow elements from. As far as the new title goes, it makes sense. It keeps the Batman V Superman...

If David Lynch Had Directed 'Return of the Jedi,' It Might Look Like This

Posted: 21 May 2014 12:30 PM PDT

The early ‘80s was an exciting time for David Lynch. Fresh of the success of his Elephant Man adaptation, which won him admiration from mainstream audiences and earned eight Academy Award nominations, Lynch was approached by George Lucas in 1981 to direct the final installment in the original Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi. Lynch turned down the project as he felt the series bore Lucas’ fingerprint. The filmmaker spoke briefly about his dalliance with the Star Wars universe in this 1985 interview from journal TIP Filmjahrbuch: TIP: George Lucas got in touch with you because of "The return of the Jedi" at that time. Lynch: Yes. George Lucas got in touch with me at the same time Dino did, and I had to make an important decision. George was great...

Try Not to Die from Dysentery in This 8-Bit Version of 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'

Posted: 21 May 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Seth McFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West opens nationwide at the end of the month, but you can start getting ready for the Family Guy creator’s latest live-action comedy by checking out an 8-bit retro game inspired by the film. Universal and Adult Swim have crafted Trail to Old Stump, a game that finds players traversing the harsh American landscape in their horse and buggy while dodging all sorts of challenges. If this sounds a lot like the old Oregon Trail game, that’s because it is – only with the lowbrow humor McFarlane fans have come to know and love. You can still die from dysentery, have your cart break down, spend your money on food, and so on. The only real difference is the McFarlane–styled comedy. One other thing that is...

Movie News: Coen Brothers Team with Steven Spielberg; Jennifer Aniston's 'Life of Crime' and Anna Kendrick's 'Happy Christmas' Trailers

Posted: 21 May 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Life of Crime Trailer: A new adaptation of a novel by the late, great Elmore Leonard (Get Shorty) will arrive in theaters on August 29. Life of Crime stars Jennifer Aniston, Tim Robbins, Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), John Hawkes and Isla Fisher in the tale of a kidnapped wife, her philandering husband, his mistress and two determined criminals; the first trailer looks very promising. [Yahoo]   Untitled Cold War Thriller: Talk about versatility! We just heard that the Coen brothers are readying a "comical yarn" about old Hollywood, and now comes word that they've been hired to write a new draft of a script for director Steven Spielberg. Tom Hanks is attached to star in the (currently untitled) Cold War thriller, which is based on the real-life story of an...
