How the Makers of 'Ping Pong Summer' Pulled Off the Perfect Summer Soundtrack

Posted: 29 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Ocean City, Maryland, 1985. Casey Kasem’s “American Top 40” rules the airwaves, parachute pants are in and cassette tapes have changed how we listen to music. But for director Michael Tully there is one other craze that caught his attention back then as a teen walking the boardwalk: hip-hop. Tully’s latest feature Ping Pong Summer (opening June 6 in theaters and VOD) is a nostalgic rush for anyone who grew up in the mid-'80s, bringing us back to a time when beatboxing, gold chains and oversized boom boxes were just reaching the suburbs; and the sounds of Whodini and the Fat Boys set the stage for the global impact groups like the Beastie Boys and Run DMC would soon have on a generation.   But how did a low seven-figure indie comedy centered...

The Last Horror Blog: The Perfect Movie to Watch While You Study for Final Exams

Posted: 29 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Welcome to The Last Horror Blog, a biweekly column on all things horror. Peter Berg talks Shocker remake – We’ve heard rumors about a potential remake of Wes Craven’s Shocker for quite some time now, but so far nothing’s really come of it. That hasn’t stopped leading man Peter Berg from saying he’d be down for a rematch with villainous TV repairman Horace Pinker – but there’s one caveat: “I'd love to remake it. Wes would direct it; I'd star in it." I’m all for Craven directing, particularly since the original film never matched his vision (the short version of the story behind why that is involves his special effects guy having a nervous breakdown during filming, leaving Craven and crew with a...

The Directors of 'All Cheerleaders Die' Tell Us About Making Their Highly Entertaining Horror Comedy

Posted: 29 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

There was a time when it was totally normal for horror movies to be about high schoolers doing bad things and having bad things done to them. Strangely, that's not really the case anymore. Horror today has traded high school locker rooms for kitchens in suburbia. And while you certainly don't have to set a horror movie in high school to make it good, you do leave a lot of that great, youthful teen energy and comradery on the table when you make movies set exclusively in big, creaky houses. Thankfully writer-directors Lucky McKee (May) and Chris Sivertson (The Lost) have just given the high school horror movie a jolt in the arm with All Cheerleaders Die, a highly entertaining horror comedy that's available on Video On Demand platforms now before hitting theaters on June...

Meet Alice Liddell, the Little Girl Who Inspired 'Alice in Wonderland'

Posted: 29 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Most people can’t get enough of the real-life stories behind their favorite movies. One fantasy-film favorite took its inspiration from the relationship a wildly imaginative writer had with a little girl named Alice. Of course, we’re talking about the true story behind Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, which has been adapted into several films throughout the years — including a 3D version by the count of creep, Tim Burton. An 1862 boat trip is the site where Carroll first told 10-year-old Alice Liddell the story of a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole into a surreal fantasy world. Carroll was a friend of the Liddell family and often entertained the children with fanciful tales. He also photographed Alice and her nine siblings, but the...

Family Friendly: Watch New Trailers for 'Earth to Echo' and 'Annie'

Posted: 29 May 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Dave Green’s Earth to Echo doesn’t have a wildly original premise, but it has all the makings of a summer blockbuster favorite: a family-friendly story, found footage and adorable (but lonely) extraterrestrials. Best friends Tuck, Munch and Alex (not characters from a Law & Order episode) receive mysterious, encoded messages on their mobile phones. When the gang seeks help from their parents and the police, they are met with a lot of scoffing — as is often the case with authority figures and kid sleuths in movies. The friends embark on a journey to crack the code and assist the strange being from another world who needs their help, changing all of their lives forever. Here’s our first look at Earth to Echo, opening in theaters July 2...

See the 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For' Poster That Was Too Sexy for the MPAA

Posted: 29 May 2014 12:47 PM PDT

Recently a whole batch of character posters for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For arrived online minus one particular poster for Eva Green's character, Ava Lord. According to Page Six, her poster was a little too sexy for the MPAA, who rejected it for nudity--or, well, for having a little too much boobage.  Here it is below. What do you think? Click to enlarge   So who is Ava Lord? Well she's the title character in A Dame to Kill For (as in, yeah, she's a dame you'd kill for); a classic femme fatale who manipulates men for her own amusement. We can see that--this poster alone has already manipulated us into staring at it for way too long. Green has already turned in one of our favorite female performances of the year (in terms of just how nuts she is...

Check Out This Exclusive Clip from the World's First Second-Screen Movie, the Sci-fi Thriller 'App'

Posted: 29 May 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Movie studios have been pushing the second-screen experience on the Blu-ray front for awhile now. but so far the utility of having your phone or computer out while watching a movie has been confined to using the smaller screen to display things like trivia or games or interviews. A newly released movie is looking to take that idea to the next level by offering a true second-screen experience. The appropriately titled App comes from the Netherlands and is now available On Demand in the United States. It's a sci-fi thriller about a girl who wakes up one day to find a mysterious app installed on her phone. It's called IRIS, and it's a sort of artificial intelligence that begins invading Anna's life. It starts by sending messages and images to her contacts, and gets...

This Fan-Made Groot Mask from 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Looks Better Than CGI

Posted: 29 May 2014 11:12 AM PDT

When Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1, 2014, people all over the world are going to meet Groot, a giant, humanoid tree monster voiced by Vin Diesel. He'll no doubt spawn countless cosplay at Comic-Con and Halloween, but anyone planning a Groot costume in their not-too-distant future should know that someone has already made the Groot mask to end all Groot masks. The below image is a fan-made Groot mask that's so dang good it keeps tricking our brains into wanting to think it's Photoshop magic and not the hard work of one very, very talented fan. It also doesn't help that there's no making-of pictures to go along with it, just this single picture submitted to the blog Guard the Galaxy [via Blastr].  Update: Thanks to Matt Patches...
