Movie News Alfonso Cuaron may direct the Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Sticking with spin-offs, Gareth Edwards will direct the first Star Wars one, and Warner Bros. has confirmed a Ninjago movie. The Coen brothers' next movie will be Hail Caesar, a comedy set in 1950s Hollywood. Oh, and the Coens are also writing Steven Spielberg's next movie. Apparently everyone at Cannes thinks Foxcatcher will earn Steve Carrell an Oscar nomination. Quentin Tarantino wants to put 90 minutes of deleted scenes back in Django Unchained and release it as a miniseries. The entire Halloween collection is hitting Blu-ray in one big box set for the first time ever this fall.   The Geek Stuff and Videos The...

Posted: 23 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT

Who are the Schmoes, and what exactly do they know? The Schmoes are a couple of regular guys, Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis, who--like you--are the people for whom movies are made. Each week, we're posting brand new video from the Schmoes that'll give their spin on a given movie topic. With a summer full of superhero movies, including X-Men: Days of Future Past (in theaters now), the Schmoes take a look at the top five superhero abilities in movies. Who has the coolest powers? Watch this week's episode to find out.     MORE FROM AROUND THE WEB: ZergNet (function() { var zergnet = document.createElement('script'); zergnet.type = 'text/javascript'; zergnet.async...

Your Top Three: Time-Travel Movies

Posted: 23 May 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Your Top Three is a series here at Movies.com where we choose a topic and you give us your top three picks. I dig just about any movie involving time travel, even those starring Jean-Claude Van Damme or Mick Jagger. So, I got very excited about the X-Men movie franchise dipping into that territory for its latest installment, X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's like an episode of Quantum Leap starring Wolverine. That's a hard premise to ignore.  And it made me wonder what other series could use a blast of the past or the future. Imagine, say, The Fast and the Furious and the Future or a James Bond installment where he goes back to the '60s -- oh yeah, that was an Austin Powers movie. But imagine if Star Wars used time travel in a movie. Star Trek has...

Update: Edgar Wright No Longer Directing 'Ant-Man' for Marvel

Posted: 23 May 2014 05:28 PM PDT

UPDATE: 5/23/14: As you can see from all of the updates below, Ant-Man has had a long road to becoming a movie, and apparently that road just got a little bumpier: Edgar Wright and Marvel have now parted ways due to a disagreement of what direction the movie should take. And considering Wright and Joe Cornish are the ones who wrote that movie, it certainly does seem to ring some alarm bells that after all this time Marvel has given them some kind of directive they didn't agree with. It would seem Marvel isn't too concerned with losing Wright, though, as it is still planning on releasing Ant-Man on July 17, 2015 and will announce a replacement director soon. UPDATE: 1/13/14: When Paul Rudd was confirmed to be playing Ant-Man for Edgar Wright, we didn't...

See an Adorable Comic That Imagines Anakin Skywalker's Life if He Didn't Become Darth Vader

Posted: 23 May 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Truth be told, if Anakin Skywalker were never seduced by the Dark Side, we wouldn't have Darth Vader. And if we didn't have Darth Vader, we wouldn't have the first three Star Wars movies. Instead, we might have some silly dysfunctional family comedy about the trials and tribulations of a lightsaber-wielding Jedi trying to juggle dad duties while protecting the universe... or something.  And if that family comedy was a comic strip, it might look a little something like these adorable fan-made images from Italian artist Renata Castellani [via GeekxGirls] that imagines a world where Luke and Leia grew up together alongside a loving dad and a Padme who didn't die right after giving birth. Oh, what could've...

Watch an Awesome Drum-Off Between Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith

Posted: 23 May 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Using their uncanny likeness to drum up donations for Cancer for College, comedian Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith duked it out in a drum battle on The Tonight Show. The brothers from another mother are total doppelgängers. Smith has been known to wear tees that say “I Am Not Will Ferrell,” acknowledging their freakishly similar appearance. Ferrell has also been a good sport about the long-running fake feud. The drum-off went smashingly, but it was the appearance of Ferrell’s famous cowbell that really put it over the top. The cowbell reference comes from Ferrell’s Saturday Night Live days when he played fictional Blue Öyster Cult member Gene Frenkle — who, indeed, played a mean cowbell. The catchphrase of...

The Best Movie Trailers of the Week

Posted: 23 May 2014 03:00 PM PDT

Welcome back to Best Movie Trailers of the Week, a column where we handpick the best new movie trailers that have arrived online over the past week. Life Itself It’s hard to work in this industry and not be completely taken by the trailer for Life Itself, but even for a causal moviegoer or perhaps someone who doesn’t know Roger Ebert at all, this promo not only offers a rousing sampling of his life, personality and achievements, but also does just what Ebert says of the movies at the end of the piece: “It helps us to identify with the people who are sharing this journey with us.” I’ve identified with Ebert for many years through his reviews and look forward to experiencing that again in a different form through this film. Kingsman: The...

See 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Reviewed in Comic Strip Form

Posted: 23 May 2014 01:45 PM PDT

It's an X-Men homecoming, as Bryan Singer returns to the film franchise he started back in 2000! The superhero movie landscape is a lot different now than it was then, so it's up to X-Men Days of Future Past to not only deliver on audience expectations but to clean up the divergent, conflicting timelines of X-Men First Class and the core films that preceded it. That's quite a task, but this is the seventh X-film so it should be a breeze, right?  CLICK TO ENLARGE Previously on Stripped: Godzilla   Previously on Stripped: Godzilla The Amazing Spider-Man 2
