Today in Movie Culture: NASA's Real TIE Fighters and Droids, 'Zootopia' Does 'Star Wars' and More

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 11:00 PM PST

Here are a bunch of little bites to satisfy your hunger for movie culture:   Star Wars in Real Life Episode I: Kyle Hill of Nerdist's Because Science explains how NASA already sort of has TIE Fighters and had them long before the first Star Wars movie opened:   Star Wars in Real Life Episode II: Speaking of NASA, they also have real droids that are comparable to -- but better than -- R2-D2 and C-3PO. But BB-8 from Star Wars: The Force Awakens is not viewed as something they'd want (via Geekologie):   Star Wars Cosplay of the Day: Laurie Foster's gender-swapped Darth Maul is evidence that not everyone hates the Star Wars prequels (via KamiKame):   Star Wars Fan of the Day: Watch a fan play all the instrument parts...

DVD Obscura: The New Indie and International Movies You Need to Watch

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 10:00 PM PST

New Indie: Over the years, Los Angeles has been captured on film as everything from a paradise to a hellhole, but no film has ever shot the city quite like the acclaimed Tangerine (Magnolia Home Entertainment), which follows trans sex worker Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) around various parts of the city as she tracks down her man, who cheated on her while she spent a month in prison. (To add insult to injury, she got locked up in the first place for taking the blame on his behalf.) Followed around by best pal Alexandra (Maya Taylor, a brilliant comic foil), Sin-Dee gets herself into one scrape after another in an orange-hued City of Angels. Director Sean Baker (Starlet, Prince of Broadway) shot the entire movie on an iPhone, but the results are a lot more richly cinematic than...

Remember When... Edward Scissorhands Introduced Us to Johnny Depp's Weirdness?

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:00 PM PST

One of the numerous magic touches in Edward Scissorhands is that the title character, created in a lab by a mad scientist, never ages. Poor Winona Ryder turns into a grandma, but there's Eddie at the end of the movie, still up in that castle, still in his 20s.  Well, not to rub it in, but as of this week, Edward Scissorhands (the movie) is 25 years old. If you remember seeing it in theaters, then unlike Edward, You're Old®.  Like many good things in life, we can thank Batman for Edward Scissorhands. Not for its existence, maybe, but for its existence in its current form. Tim Burton began developing the story (which he'd conceived as an outcast teenager) with screenwriter Caroline Thompson while he was still working...

Did They Love It or Hate It? Watch Fans React to 1999's 'Star Wars: The Phantom Menace'

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 07:30 PM PST

16 years. That's how long it was between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace, Star Wars episodes VI and I, respectively. As Star Wars: The Force Awakens prepares to hit theaters on December 18, it'll have been 16 years since the last Star Wars trilogy sent a first installment to the masses. Is this a sign? Some kind of cosmic connection between The Phantom Menace and The Force Awakens -- both launching pads for a new trilogy of Star Wars stories? If you ask fans today, they probably hope that's the only connection. But if you asked them back in 1999, they were over the moon when it came to The Phantom Menace. Of course as time marched on, so have our collective feelings about George Lucas' Star Wars prequels. What began as this great blossoming love...

Check Out a Teaser Trailer and Poster for the Next 'Godzilla' Movie

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 06:00 PM PST

There's a new Godzilla movie coming out next year. No, it's not the sequel to the recent Hollywood version directed by Gareth Edwards. That arrives in 2018. For some of you, the 2016 release will be the preferred option for the "King of the Monsters" anyway. It's called Godzilla Resurgence, and it's the first Toho-produced Japanese Godzilla movie in 12 years, since 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars. Toho is the studio that made the original Godzilla in 1954, and over the course of half a century produced a total of 28 entries in the franchise. Most of them are enjoyed for their iconic hokiness, particularly with regards to the man-in-a-suit monster effects. Godzilla Resurgence will feature a mix of computer and practical...

Movies That Taught Us How Much the Ocean Sucks

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 04:30 PM PST

The fact that Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea opens on the same day that I leave for a cruise vacation doesn't feel like an accident. This is the Movie World providing me with a timely warning: I probably won't return to dry land alive. This isn't me being pessimistic or a fatalist. This is just me remembering that the movies have never been shy about how the ocean is a deathtrap and kills just about anyone who tries to cross it. Seriously: if the likes of Chris Hemsworth can find himself besieged by a whale hellbent on revenge, what will happen to a ordinary Joe like me once I'm in the middle of the sea? The ocean sucks. It will be the end of me. This will be my last Movies.com article. These are the movies that have taught me so.   Big Boat...

President Obama Has Named His Favorite Movie of 2015

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 03:00 PM PST

President Obama continues to align himself with hope, even in his pop culture choices. According to People magazine, he has named The Martian as his favorite movie of the year, and it's not difficult to see why. Ridley Scott's latest sci-fi effort, which stars Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars, is full of American ideals. For instance, the plot involves a rescue mission to retrieve Damon's character, representing an extreme case of the "no man left behind" creed that has been with us since before the United States even existed, originating with the French and Indian War. And especially the end of The Martian is full of patriotic enthusiasm for the country's space program.  Unlike many past commanders-in-chief, however, Obama...

Movie News: J.J. Abrams Recommends 'Selma' Director for 'Star Wars'; Watch First 'The Legend of Tarzan' Trailer

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 01:30 PM PST

Star Wars: J.J. Abrams thinks Ava DuVernay, the director of the stirring civil rights drama Selma, would be a great choice for the Star Wars universe. Abrams noted her passion for genre movies and expressed his belief that the 'sophistication' and 'humanity' of Selma proved she would "kill it" with an epiosde of Star Wars. DuVernay already passed on Black Panther; she has yet to commit to directing another feature yet. [Nerdist]   The Dark Tower: Idris Elba is said to be the leading candidate to star as gunslinger Roland Deschain in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower. Matthew McConaughey is in talks to portray the villainous Man in Black; the story takes place in a world filled with magic. Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal...

Golden Globe Nominations: 'Carol' Leads the Pack, as 'Spy,' 'Trainwreck' and 'Mad Max' Join the Party

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 11:00 AM PST

Mad Max: Fury Road! Will Smith! Spy! Stallone! The 2016 Golden Globe nominations are in, and we've got ourselves a very interesting race this year -- one fueled by a mix of dramas, comedies and epic action extravaganzas.  If there's one movie that might be breaking away from the pack, it could be Carol. The drama, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as two women who crush hard on each other in the early 1950s, lead all contenders with five nominations, followed by The Big Short, The Revenant and Steve Jobs with four, and The Danish Girl, The Hateful Eight, Spotlight, The Martian, and Room with three each. The biggest surprises? How about Will Smith (Concussion) squeezing his way into the Best Actor race instead of Johnny Depp (Black Mass). How about Sly...

Watch the First 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows' Trailer

Posted: 10 Dec 2015 09:56 AM PST

Courageous anthropomorphic turtles Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Donatello made a triumphant return to the big screen in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which became a bigger succes than many expected when it opened wide in August 2014. Though critical reaction in the U.S. was not kind, the movie's goofy charms struck a chord with audiences worldwide -- especially with children. The idea of wisecracking turtles who don't fit into normal society springing into action is so weird and fun, it's no wonder that generations of kids have loved them.  The movie grossed $493 million at the box office, and a sequel was quickly given the green light. The first trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows has now been released; it's filled with...
