The Geek Beat: Kids Movies That Are Unintentionally Terrifying Posted: 14 Oct 2014 11:00 PM PDT 'Tis the season for scary movies, and these days you'll find an abundance of lists featuring the highs and lows of the horror genre. This is not one of those lists. This is a list of films that – for the most part – didn't set out to be scary movies, but for one reason or another ended up becoming the stuff of nightmares. In some cases, they're “family movies” that take a dark turn, or otherwise innocent films intended for kids that feature a scene more than capable of shocking adults. Everyone has one or two of them: Those movies that snuck up on us when we weren't expecting to be frightened and left the sort of lasting impression that prompts a few sleepless nights. These are seven of mine: Pee-wee's Big... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
You're Old: 'Look Who's Talking' Came Out 25 Years Ago Posted: 14 Oct 2014 10:00 PM PDT Do thoughts of your inexorable march toward death consume you day and night? Do you long to rid yourself of all reminders of your advancing mortality? Then take solace in this column, which is about a movie about a baby! A newborn baby full of life and promise! A newborn baby that is now 25 years old! Yes, Look Who's Talking was released on October 13, 1989, meaning that if you saw it in the theater, You're Old™. We're sorry. This kind of backfired. When Look Who's Talking is mentioned today, it's usually the butt of a joke, as an example of either the type of idiocy John Travolta was doing before Quentin Tarantino rebooted him, or of how a dumb, innocuous comedy can sometimes inexplicably launch multiple sequels. But 25 years ago, Look Who's... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
New on DVD/Blu-ray: 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Is Big, Ambitious and Immensely Entertaining Posted: 14 Oct 2014 09:00 PM PDT X-Men: Days of Future Past - Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD Director: Bryan Singer Cast: Hugh Jackman, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender,Jennifer Lawrence, Patrick Stewart. Full cast + crew Everyone is so focused on the Marvel cinematic universe that people tend to forget that the X-Men cinematic universe is at the top of its game right now. Days of Future Past was a production that seemed like it was destined to fail. It was boasting an absurd amount of characters, it promised to tie together two different timelines, and it had a beloved comic storyline to live up to. Those are all difficult things to pull off, and yet returning director Bryan Singer did it in a big and immensely entertaining way. All the stuff fans feared would go wrong... The Oscars Website Is Turned into a Vault of Hollywood Nostalgia Posted: 14 Oct 2014 07:45 PM PDT The minds at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who help run this hot mess we call Hollywood have redesigned their website. And there’s some pretty great stuff to be found there. Since the Academy went online in 2008, they’ve been boasting about their “10 million photographs, 165,000 film and video assets, 80,000 screenplays, 50,000 posters, 20,000 production and costume design drawings, and 1,400 special collections." But the old design felt limited. L.A.-based entertainment marketing agency Trailer Park helped them out, creating an interactive, cineaste’s dream. Of course, this is all leading up to the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opening in 2017. You can take in your own little exhibition at home via the website. Gizmodo... Bill Murray and 'Lost in Translation' Director Sofia Coppola Reunite Just in Time for Christmas Posted: 14 Oct 2014 06:30 PM PDT Re-u-nit-ed and it feels so gooood! For the first time since 2003’s Lost in Translation, Variety tells us that Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray will be joining forces for a televised holiday special that stars the sad-sack actor performing some classic Christmas carols. The finer details are still being sketched out at this point, but Murray—who just completed work on St. Vincent, playing a crotchety veteran whose friendship with the kid next door changes his outlook on life—told the outlet: “It’s not going to be live. We’re going to do it like a little movie. It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music. It will have texture. It will have threads through it that are writing. There will be prose. It will have a patina... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

Rare Concept Art: See Completely Different Looks for the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' and 'E.T.' Posted: 14 Oct 2014 03:40 PM PDT Fans were pretty split on this summer’s rebooting of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, but the film earned enough money to warrant a sequel and the Turtles are among this year's top Halloween costumes. We don’t know what producer Michael Bay and company have in store for their next adventure, but we can look back at what might have been thanks to what is presumably concept art from the first feature. Artist Tsvetomir Georgiev has shared a whole bunch of pieces that appear to be from the early stages of production on the 2014 movie – back when the Turtles were aliens and Shredder was rechristened Schrader. You can check out the whole gallery at Georgiev’s Facebook page, but here are a few of the high (and low) points. Shredder/Schrader...
