The 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Soundtrack Is the Only Soundtrack You Need This Summer

Posted:

guardians of the galaxy soundtrackWith a collection of tunes that Peter Quill himself would approve of, the cover and tracklist of the soundtrack for "Guardians of the Galaxy" were revealed Tuesday, and both have a nostalgia-inducing vibe.

Harkening back to its use in the film's first trailer, the soundtrack kicks off with Blue Swede's 1974 hit "Hooked on a Feeling," and the compilation's affinity for tunes from the '60s and '70s doesn't stop there. The cover seems to be cribbed from Quill's personal cassette collection, depicting a tape in a Walkman (what old people used to listen to music with, kids) labeled "Awesome Mix Vol. 1."

The retro selections no doubt have personal meaning for "Guardians" director James Gunn, who shared a photo of the soundtrack cover on his Facebook page with the note that he was "So happy [Marvel] had the balls to go with this simple design." He later posted a picture of an old Sony Walkman, noting that he put a photo of that same model "on the front page of [the 'Guardians'] pitch treatment."

Whether or not the Walkman and/or mixtape plays any significant role in the movie's plot remains to be seen, but it's a nice nod to the rag-tag, rundown feel of the Guardians gang themselves, who in a world of flashier, newer heroes, have to fight to be taken seriously as the saviors they become.

The full tracklist, via The Playlist:

1. Blue Swede - Hooked on a Feeling
2. Raspberries - Go All the Way
3. Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky
4. David Bowie - Moonage Daydream
5. Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around and Fell in Love
6. 10Cc - I'm Not in Love
7. Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
8. Redbone - Come and Get Your Love
9. The Runaways - Cherry Bomb
10. Rupert Holmes - Escape (the Pina Colada Song)
11. The Five Stairsteps - O-O-H Child
12. Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough

The soundtrack hits stores on July 29. "Guardians of the Galaxy" debuts in theaters on August 1.

The 'Horrible Bosses 2' Trailer Is Exactly as Hilarious as You Wanted It to Be (VIDEO)

Posted:

horrible bosses 2 trailerOne helping of horrible bosses just isn't enough. That's why we need "Horrible Bosses 2," and now we have a trailer to keep us company until the sequel's November 26 release date.

From what we can tell, the follow-up to the 2011 hit reunites Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Jason Bateman, and involves some kind of highly choreographed kidnapping, one that can't go down without consulting a very tattooed Jamie Foxx. Kevin Spacey is also back (this time behind bars), and Jennifer Aniston returns as the dentist with dirty deeds in mind 24-7. Noticeably absent, however, are new cast members Christoph Waltz and Chris Pine. But we're guessing they'll pop up in a future trailer.

Oh, and keep an eye out for the badass slo-mo walk done to DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What." It's the best part.

"Horrible Bosses 2" hits theaters November 26.

LeVar Burton's 'Reading Rainbow' Reboot is Kickstarter's Most-Backed Project Ever

Posted:

Engadget Expand NY - Day 2
LeVar Burton's Kickstarter campaign to reboot beloved children's TV program "Reading Rainbow" had already made headlines for the short time it took to reach its fundraising goal. Now, the project has hit another milestone: It's the most-backed Kickstarter project ever.

Burton revealed the news on Twitter Monday with a jubilant post thanking supporters for their donations. "Reading Rainbow" racked up a record-breaking 91,587 backers, beating out the previous champ, the "Veronica Mars" movie Kickstarter, for the highest number of backers to support one project on the site. It's already shattered that number, and currently sits at just under 99,000 backers.
It seems that nothing can stop the "Reading Rainbow" resurgence, as the project has gained some impressive followers since it launched in May. It hit its $1 million goal less than 24 hours after it launched, and just this week, earned the support of "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, who pledged to match every dollar donated after the Kickstarter reached $4 million. (It now sits just shy of $4.9 million.)

For more information about what Burton and co. hope to achieve with "Reading Rainbow" -- or to donate to the cause -- check out the campaign's page on Kickstarter.

Starz Scoops Up Neil Gaiman's 'American Gods' For TV Series

Posted:

2013 Comic Spotlight on Neil Gaiman
Author Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel "American Gods" has found new life at Starz, and will be developed for a new series by the network.

The 2001 novel had previously been in development at HBO, but the network and Gaiman couldn't work out the details of the adaptation -- there were reportedly multiple issues with the script -- and it was abandoned earlier this year. But Gaiman later teased that the project was still alive elsewhere, and now Starz has announced that it's going ahead with a series.

"'American Gods' is a project that deserves to be made," said Starz managing director Carmi Zlotnik in a statement. "With our partners at FremantleMedia and with [executive producers] Bryan [Fuller], Michael [Green], and Neil, we believe we can create a series that honors the book and does right by the fans and viewers."

A story synopsis, per TheWrap:

"American Gods" portrays a war between the old gods of biblical and mythological roots and a new group of gods "reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs."

Its main character is Shadow Moon, who is described as "an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities."

Fuller is writing the pilot and Green will serve as showrunner. No word yet on a premiere date.

The 'Jem' Movie Will Have 'a Lot of Pink' (and a Possible Sequel), Says Star Aubrey Peeples

Posted:

aubrey peeples jem and the hologramsThe first teaser image for the upcoming adaptation of "Jem and the Holograms" seemed to promise that the live action flick would keep the spirit of the original animated series intact, and now star Aubrey Peeples has confirmed that that will indeed be the case.

In an interview with E! News, Peeples said that there was plenty for fans to be excited about.

"I'm not allowed to say too much about what the looks are, but I can guarantee you that there's going to be a lot of pink," Peeples said. "Nobody will be disappointed with the hair, makeup, and the fashion."

As for what that fashion entails, the actress said that the outfits rocked by Jem and her band, the Holograms, would delight moviegoers.

"We had a lot of different performance looks, each one is truly outrageous," Peeples said, channeling one of the series's iconic phrases. "I look at pictures and I can't believe that's me. It's so weird."

While the 20-year-old "Nashville" star admitted that she had never seen the original 1980s series, she said she immediately connected with the story -- and envisions another installment of "Jem" hitting theaters sometime soon.

"They're badass. They're female rock stars in the '80s fighting crime. What could be any better?" Peeples told E! News. " ... We'll have to wait and see, but I think there will be lots of Jem to come."

No release date for "Jem and the Holograms" yet. Stay tuned.

The 'Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda' Teaser Promises a Battle of Ridiculous Proportions (VIDEO)

Posted:

While "Sharknado 2: The Second One" has been getting all the attention ahead of its debut later this month, Syfy is proving that its penchant for ridiculous creature features knows no bounds with a new trailer for "Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda."

This is actually the second film in the "Sharktopus" saga, this first one starring Eric Roberts and featuring a group of scientists that engineer a half shark, half octopus for use by the U.S. military. Naturally, the genetically modified beast becomes sentient and breaks free from its captors, leading to lots of bloody shots of humans getting gobbled before Sharktopus is eventually destroyed.

But apparently, the creature wasn't entirely wiped out -- or perhaps he had a brother? -- because he's back for more destruction, this time battling the Pteracuda, no doubt a mash-up of a pterosaur and barracuda. Just where scientists got a pterosaur from remains unclear (maybe they called up the folks from "Jurassic Park"?), but regardless of its origins, like the Sharktopus before it, the hybrid monster looks pretty badass.

As for who will win in a fight, the small bit of footage we see of the pair shows Pteracuda getting some good shots in on Sharktopus. Then again, the latter creature came back from the dead, so don't count him out just yet.

"Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda" debuts on Syfy on August 2.

The 'St. Vincent' Trailer Showcases the Bill Murray We All Know and Love

Posted:

st vincent trailerBetween popping up at bachelor parties and crashing engagement photo sessions, Bill Murray found time to shoot a new movie, "St. Vincent," the trailer for which has made its debut.

Murray stars as the titular man whose cranky, hard drinking, strip club-going lifestyle is turned upside down by the arrival of a new neighbor and single mother (Melissa McCarthy) and her 12-year-old son, Oliver (newcomer Jaeden Lieberher). For reasons Vincent himself probably doesn't even understand, he volunteers to watch Oliver after school, and thus begins an unlikely friendship that sees Vincent taking the kid on trips to the racetrack, and teaching him how to fight after he's beaten up by some bullies.

"I'm small, in case you haven't noticed," Oliver complains to Vincent about his penchant for attracting tough guys.

"Yeah, so was Hitler," Vincent replies.

While the cute kid meets gruff old guy trope has been played to death by Hollywood, we like the looks of what "St. Vincent" has to offer. Lieberher especially seems promising in the role, and it's always delightful to see Murray and McCarthy on the big screen. Add in Chris O'Dowd as a Catholic school priest and teacher and a surprise Naomi Watts doing an impressive eastern European accent, and you've got all the makings for a fun flick.

"St. Vincent," written and directed by first-timer Theodore Melfi, hits theaters on October 24.

Visiting the 'Star Wars: Episode VII' Set Reduces Adult Man to Tears

Posted:

star wars episode vii kevin smithIn a move that's sure to make him the envy of fanboys and -girls everywhere, Kevin Smith has visited the set of "Star Wars: Episode VII," and has deemed the flick awesome.

Smith, who's also a pretty big "Star Wars" fanboy himself, revealed his visit on Instagram with a tear-streaked selfie, noting that while he signed a non-disclosure agreement to prevent spoilers, what he could say was that the flick looked like it would be great -- and the joyful experience made him cry like a baby.

"The Force is WITH this movie," Smith wrote on Instagram. "Holy Sith..."

That's high praise from the writer-director, who's an avid sci-fi and superhero fan and known for speaking his mind about all manner of pop culture. (Fans of Smith's SModcast network of podcasts are no doubt familiar with his affinity for smack talking and enthusiastic gushing in equal measure.)

Whether every "Star Wars" fan will have the same reaction as Smith remains to be seen, but his endorsement certainly makes us cautiously optimistic that we'll be pleased when "Episode VII" finally hits theaters.

"Star Wars: Episode VII" is due out on December 18, 2015.

This one's usually a toughie considering the competition among the players hailing from the best, albeit most crowded, shows on TV. For instance, pretty much everyone on "Modern Family" and "Saturday Night Live" is in the running on this ballot.

Pixar Was Almost Ruined Before It Ever Made a Movie

Posted:

pixar ruinedCan you imagine a moviegoing world without the films from Pixar? No "Toy Story," no "Monsters, Inc.," no "Finding Nemo," no "Cars," no "Up"? The upcoming, fantastic-looking "Inside Out" never happening? According to a new book by Pixar co-founder Ed Catmull, that unthinkable scenario was almost a reality.

In his management book "Creativity, Inc.," Catmull revealed that back in 1985, the animation start-up was almost purchased by General Motors, which wanted to buy the company to help develop and design new automobiles. At the time, Pixar wasn't known for its animation -- "Toy Story," the world's first feature-length animated movie, was still 10 years off -- but more for its technology as the computer division of Lucasfilm.

GM had planned to partner with electronics giant Philips to co-purchase Pixar for $15 million, plus an additional $15 million in seed money. Per AutoBlog.com:

"General Motors was intrigued because we were leading the way in the modeling of objects, which they felt could be used in car design," says Catmull. Philips was interested in the technology behind the Pixar Image Computer, which could read huge amounts of data from imaging machines like CT scanners or MRIs. Those two pieces of technology made Pixar a sweet acquisition target...

Catmull wrote in his book that Pixar, which was in danger of shuttering altogether at the time, was eager for the deal to go through, but for whatever reason, it didn't happen. Luckily for the future animation powerhouse, Apple founder Steve Jobs ended up "swooping in" to save the company, and the rest is cinematic history.

Sounds like fodder for a movie. Luckily, Pixar is still with us to make that happen someday.

The Bench From 'The Fault in Our Stars' Has Disappeared

Posted:

the fault in our stars benchFile a Missing Chair report: The green bench that Hazel and Augustus sit and kiss on in "The Fault in Our Stars" has mysteriously disappeared from its spot on Amsterdam's Leidsegracht canal.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the bench -- which has hundreds of replicas around the city -- has been missing for at least a month. A large flowerpot is now in its place. The city was alerted to the disappearance when fans of the movie wanted to see the spot where Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort locked lips.

"It's a bit embarrassing, because we do keep good track of them, but it's gone all right," said Amsterdam city spokesman Stephan van der Hoek.

Was the bench taken by fans wanting to own a piece of the movie? Did neighbors tired of tourists remove it? Is this a simple case of vandalism? It's even possible the city itself took it away for repairs!

Van der Hoek promised that the bench would be replaced within the next few weeks, if there's a replacement in stock. In the meantime, he joked, "Keep your eyes on eBay."

Happy Holidays, Indeed: 'Sherlock' Is Getting a 2015 Christmas Special

Posted:

Happy, happy Christmas, "Sherlock" fans!

In 2015.

As "Sherlock" fans well know, it's nearly impossible to get super-in-demand stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman together to film new episodes of the BBC series. Creators Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss previously warned us that season 4 might not happen for two years! But Freeman doled out a sliver of hope a few months ago when he revealed they might film a one-off special before then.

Now, the "Hobbit" and "Fargo" star tells the Telegraph it's "pretty likely" that the team will reunite in early 2015 to make a Christmas special to air later that year.

"If that's going to be a special - I'm speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour, I'd get fired - I think that might be for next Christmas," he said. "A Christmas special. That's what I understand."

That's some 17 months away -- if it airs in the U.S. concurrently as the U.K. It's like the best / worst Christmas present ever.

'Boardwalk Empire' Teaser: Can Nucky Stay Alive Long Enough to Cash Out?

Posted:

All empires fall.

That's the message in the brief teaser for the fifth and final season of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," which is very concerning for Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi).

There isn't much footage in the video, which is set to an ominous cover of Harry Nilsson's "One" by Alva Noto & Blixa Bargeld). We see flashes of Nucky on the boardwalk and in a boardroom, and get glimpses at Lucky Luciano, Al Capone, Nelson Van Alden, and Chalky White.

Speaking of Chalky -- his portrayer, Michael K. Williams, recently revealed that "Boardwalk Empire" will have a major time jump.

"The storyline has jumped seven years [into the future], which is why I have the beard now," Williams told Den of Geek. "The Depression has set in. The days of the shiny shoes and fancy suits are long gone."

Nucky without shiny shoes? His empire really has fallen!

"Boardwalk Empire" premieres September 2014.

Fox Cancels 'Hieroglyph' ... Before It Even Airs

Posted:

In what might be one of the quickest cancellations ever, Fox is pulling the plug on "Hieroglyph," a drama set in ancient Egypt.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network decided not to make the series due to "creative reasons." "Hieroglyph" was greenlit just last month by former Fox entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly, who reportedly envisioned it as Fox's version of "Game of Thrones."

Only the pilot had been shot; writers have been working on the other 12 episodes for a midseason premiere. But sources tell THR that the scripts were not at an acceptable quality level.

"Hieroglyph" starred Max Brown as a thief who stayed out of prison by serving the Pharaoh (Reece Ritchie) in navigating "navigating palace intrigue, seductive concubines, criminal underbellies and even a few divine sorcerers."

This isn't the first time Fox has canceled a show before it ever aired; the network yanked "Us & Them," a romantic comedy starring Alexis Bledel and Jason Ritter that had shot six episodes. Those episodes will never air, locked away in Fox's vault.

But Fox isn't doing away with all of Reilly's pick-ups. "Gotham," "Mulaney," "Backstrom," "Red Band Society," and its other freshman shows are all expected to debut this fall.

'The Bachelorette' Week 7: Who's Up, Who's Down, Who's Out

Posted:

The stakes were high in this week's "Bachelorette" episode, as the hometown dates loomed just out of reach. Andi and the remaining suitors headed to Brussels where tensions soared and love bloomed. What went down?

-Marcus had the first one on one, a date that involved galavanting around Brussels eating Belgian waffles and mussels. At dinner we saw a different, more emotional side of him when he opened up about his difficult childhood. Things are starting to get real, y'all.

-There were only supposed to be two one on ones, as usual, but sneaky Nick wasn't having it. He totally snuck up to Andi's hotel room after her date, whisked her off for a late night rendezvous (a move she was very into), and they made out for what seemed like two full hours.

-Josh got a one on one in the lovely city of Ghent. After some awkwardness and tiptoeing, he admitted to Andi he was falling in love with her. Finally. Andi perked up after this revelation and all seemed well.

-The group date had the guys rail bike peddling up to a monastery with Andi in tow. After each of the guys got their respective time with her, it was time to give out the group date rose. Nick. Dun dun dun. The men were not pleased. Nick and Andi got even more time together, and of course, his already bloated confidence skyrocketed. There were fireworks. No, seriously, there were actual fireworks on their date.

-Later, the guys confronted Nick about his game playing ways. Apparently he's more about strategy than Andi, and he's (here it comes...) not there for the right reasons.

Let's dive further into where these remaining fellows stand:

Who's out? Despite "putting all his eggs in one basket" and getting those feelings out there, Brian did not make the cut. Dylan, who hasn't had much quality screen time lately anyhow, was also sent home.

Who's up? At this point in the game all the men are contenders since things are getting so very serious and family is about to be involved. Marcus is definitely creeping up on Andi's radar thanks to his total openness.

MVP: It's gotta be Nick. The guy "broke the rules" and took Andi a rogue date, got the group rose and even more one on one time, and managed to be hated by the other contestants while he was at it.

Somewhere in the middle: Chris. At one point in the group date, sweet Chris and Andi went all "Ghost" and got flirty with some clay. They're cute and all, but we want to see their relationship go to a deeper place if it's going to progress.

Somewhere we're not sure: Josh and Andi seem like a great match, but it still feels like there's a missing piece to that puzzle. He's trying to go the honest route with this whole thing and his I love yous felt a little forced, even if he does have feelings for Andi.

Time (and those always dramatic hometown dates) will tell what's in store for Andi's final four.

Melissa McCarthy Talks Susan Sarandon's Ankles, Marc Maron Remembers a Fallen Childhood Idol in Our Late Night Roundup (VIDEO)

Posted:

Melissa McCarthy, Jimmy Kimmel, Susan Sarandon, Tammy
Didn't stay up for Monday night's late night talk shows? Here's some of what you might have missed:

Melissa McCarthy stopped by "Jimmy Kimmel Live" to promote her new movie, "Tammy," and while Kimmel asked her about a host of topics, the conversation always seemed to turn back to McCarthy's costar, Susan Sarandon, who plays McCarthy's grandmother in the film. In the first clip, the actress chatted about her upcoming handprint ceremony at TCL (formerly Grauman's) Chinese Theater in Hollywood, and how she may go barefoot to imprint her feet, a technique suggested by Sarandon. "If it's good enough for Susan Sarandon, I'm gonna fake that it's good enough for me," McCarthy said.

Speaking of Sarandon, in the next clip, McCarthy discussed how the veteran actress's beauty was actually a hindrance to production, since Tammy and her grandmother are supposed to look "dumpy" in the film. But Sarandon is so naturally pretty, McCarthy said, that they'd often have to halt production to make her lighting less flattering, and even gave her prosthetic ankles. "Like, whose ankles are gorgeous?" McCarthy asked Kimmel, noting that "the amount of effort that went into taking the glow off" of the actress was astounding.

McCarthy also recounted her recent experience throwing out the first pitch at a Los Angeles Dodgers game, and how Dodgers pitcher Brian Wilson psyched her out beforehand. While the actress acknowledged that Wilson's ribbing was all in good fun, she said she'd still hate to be another player facing him at the plate. "I'd just throw my bat and run," she said.

Also on "Kimmel," comedian Marc Maron chatted about how his childhood in Albuquerque, New Mexico was ruined when a local children's television show host, Captain Billy, was shot. Maron explained that his father, a doctor, came home and delivered the news, and when a 7- or 8-year-old Maron asked why it happened, his father gave the blunt reply, "Some guy caught him screwing his wife." "In retrospect, that's probably the most important thing I learned from Captain Billy," Maron told Kimmel.

Maron also talked about his popular podcast, "WTF," and an awkward mix-up he had with similarly-monikered guests. The comedian said that his assistant had told him she'd booked actor Kevin McDonald, of "The Kids in the Hall" fame, only to have a complete stranger show up for a recording instead. Maron quickly learned that it was British director Kevin Macdonald ("The Last King of Scotland"), about whom Maron knew nothing. While the comedian was able to record a shortened version of "WTF," he said he still wants to get McDonald in the studio and release the interviews together.

Finally, over on "Chelsea Lately," actor Eric Bana stopped by to chat about his new movie, "Deliver Us From Evil," and the real-life demonologist who inspired the flick. Bana said he prepared for the role by watching clips of exorcisms, noting that the ceremonies were "eerie" and kept him up at night. Host Chelsea Handler offered Bana some moral support, but balked when the married actor clutched her with his wedding ring clad hand. "Why would you throw that in my face?!" asked an incredulous Handler.
