We Rank the Geekiest Movies of 2014 Posted: 30 Dec 2014 09:30 PM PST Another year is in the rearview mirror, and along with it go 12 months of memorable, forgettable and occasionally controversial movies. With the new year kicking off this week, it’s time for the Geek Beat to take one last look back at 2014 and recall some of the highlights from a year that was certainly an interesting one for Hollywood and movie fans alike. While this year didn’t feature the sort of predictable blockbusters we’ve had in years past (i.e., The Avengers or Man of Steel), it did feature quite a few films that defied expectations with an impressive haul at the box office — and a few that failed to convert critical approval into ticket sales. Rather than simply rank my 10 or 15 favorite movies of 2014, I thought it might be more interesting to... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
The Most Popular Movies of 2014 That Never Made It to America Posted: 30 Dec 2014 08:00 PM PST Movies are one of America's biggest exports. If you look at the 2014 box office totals for most foreign countries, you're bound to find the "top 10" really doesn't look all that different from a list of the most popular American movies. Most countries' lists are stacked with movies like Transformers: Age of Extinction, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Interstellar and Rio 2. However, every year there are movies that become huge hits overseas that never even make it to American shores. That's why we went through Box Office Mojo's databases country by country to find out what titles managed to actually compete with the likes of The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy to earn spots in their respective top... This New Art Reveals All Kinds of Cool Things About 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' Posted: 30 Dec 2014 06:30 PM PST It should be no surprise to you that one of the biggest and most anticipated movies of 2015 is the Avengers sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron, which lands in theaters on May 1, officially kicking off the summer movie season. As we ready ourselves to see how Marvel follows up the third highest grossing movie of all time, a bunch of new promo art for the film has arrived online, giving us a fresh look at two of the film's newest characters: Vision (Paul Bettany) and the villain, Ultron. One of the more interesting bits of info come in two character profiles on both Vision and Ultron, which explain their origin stories and, in turn, help flesh out the plot a little more while also connecting Ultron's beginnings to the fallout from the end of the last Avengers movie. They... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

See the Crazy Masks Anthony Hopkins Almost Wore in 'The Silence of the Lambs' Posted: 30 Dec 2014 04:20 PM PST Michael Myers had his modified William Shatner Halloween mask, and Jason Voorhees got his goalie mask in the third Friday the 13th movie. Some screen villains are just synonymous with the things they put on their face. Hannibal Lecter, the cannibal killer in The Silence of the Lambs, spends most of his time looking relatively normal (save for Anthony Hopkins’ creepy eyes), but he does don a mask at one point in the film when he’s in restraints and on a sort of dolly gurney. That image has become famous over the years, but we bet you probably didn’t know that director Jonathan Demme actually went through a bunch of variations before settling on the one featured in the film. The good folks at Criterion gave us a sneak peek at some of the rejects, which you can... Read More This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |

They've seen all the movies, but which ones did the Schmoes like the best and which did they like the least? Check it out below. Disney Roundup: New Photos from 'Avengers: Age of Ultron,' 'Inside Out,' 'Tomorrowland' and More Posted: 30 Dec 2014 02:00 PM PST With Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Avengers: Age of Ultron looming on the horizon, it’s easy to forget that Disney has a bunch of other movies on its slate for 2015. Join us today in taking a look at some of the other projects in the pipeline for the next 12 months – and if you’re good, we'll even throw in a new photo from Avengers. Deal? First, here's what their release plan looks like... Two projects that have gotten buried in the Lucas and Marvel avalanche are Tomorrowland and The Good Dinosaur, but we’re remedying that today with some new pics and concept art from the upcoming films. In the latter title, we explore an alternate timeline wherein the giant asteroid that hit Earth and wiped out the dinosaurs actually missed the planet... Movie News: 'Star Wars' "Millennium Falcon" Photos; New, Probably NSFW '[REC] 4: Apocalypse' Clip Posted: 30 Dec 2014 12:00 PM PST Star Wars: The Force Awakens: What appears to be a photo of Disney executive Bob Iger standing next to the Millenium Falcon on the set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is actually a composite image created by special effects company Industrial Light & Magic. Still, the image presents the first close-up view of the updated spacecraft, originally manned by Han Solo and Chewbacca. The movie is due out on December 18, 2015. [Fortune] That's What I'm Talking About: Director Richard Linklater has been widely acclaimed for his indie drama Boyhood, filmed over a period of 12 years. Linklater has now completed filming his next feature, That's What I'm Talking About, and says it is a sequel of sorts to his film Dazed and Confused, beginning four years...
